It’s come to the point that I may need to keep and store SH in a tank instead of emptying gallon bottles all the time. My concern is the potency will go down over a couple weeks, and even though the trailer is white it can still get hot inside during the day.
Those of you that keep SH on hand in a tank, do you find it’s potency degrades, and how fast?
Nice to see you back around again @anon26752184. A lid actually won’t keep your SH from degrading. I’d say don’t put more than 2 weeks worth in the tank. Not that it won’t be usable after that point, it just won’t be as hot.
I am currently getting my SH in 5 gallon carboys. I store them in my shed, which stays fairly cool and out of the sun. I put only what I think I’ll use in the next week or two into my on-board chem tank. And I try not to buy more than 4 or 5 weeks worth of SH at a time.
Sun and heat can kill your SH fairly quickly. I’d put a thermometer in your trailer just to see how hot it gets in there, and for how long. 100° for a few hours out of the day probably won’t do much, as liquids hold their temperature pretty well when not in direct sunlight.
The bigger concern you should probably have is proper venting of your tank. The fumes can eat up everything inside your trailer if you don’t have the tank sealed and vented externally.
Yikes, that’s no bueno. Maybe I’ll skip using a tank. We have these horrible bumps on the roads around town, one in particular on I-265 actually gets my trailer off the ground. I get to the jobsite and my machine is a couple inches off from where it started.
My local Dealer orders 2 drums at a time in order to deliver it to me. I have a 12x36 building that I walled off 20 feet for a shop/office. It’s got air conditioning so I figure I am good for a couple of months if needed. Up until last week I was going through about a drum per week. It’s starting to slow down now but that’s fine. I’m looking forward to getting out selling commercial flatwork jobs.
I buy it in black 55 gallon drums and it stays in my shop. I leave bleach in my 35 Gallon mix tank on my trailer all the time and never had a problem but i do usaully add fresh sh in before a job because whats left on the trailer is under 10 gallons of hw mix. I had gave my wife half a 5 gallon drum of 12% sh and she left it outside in a white 5er all winter long. I told her its probably old by now and she mixed some up in a pump up to clean with and it was still a hot mix couldn’t really tell the difference.
I understand I’m new to this forum (Just came across it) but I wash 1-3 houses a day, 5 days a week. I actually put this to test… I left a 5 gallon bucket of house mix in the work van for 3-4 days at around 80-100 degrees X-Jet (1 1/2-2 gallons sh, 6-8 ounces fresh wash or your choice of surfactant, rest is water) Potency was next to nothing and was completely clear after about 3 days sitting in the heat. I recommend only making enough house mix to get you through the day… We have 55 gallon drums of sh (Kept in a cool shop,) only keep about 4-5 gallons of pure sh in a bucket per day (depending on how much you’re washing) For soft washing, we only make enough for the day (made daily) I always try to keep my mix as fresh as possible… hope this helps!
@WeebieWashin That’s mix though. He’s talking about just SH.
A mix will deteriorate I find. SH alone doesn’t seem to change if I use it in a week or a month.
@anon37135677 yeah, I’ve had a bit going on. I’ve been trying to get out of the game, but the more I stopped advertising and promoting - the busier I got!?!
New to the forum been doing alot of reading and wondering why most guys buy the gallon jugs of SH i have a pool guy that supplies the gated community’s up here and he sell me the blue barrels of 12% at a decent price. Just wondering what’s the pro’s & con’s of it and do the gallons last longer than the barrels in storage?
