Is this furring?

Tried testing out some chemicals on my deck today to get a feel for the process. From left to right is SH, Sodium Hydroxide, and Potassium Hydroxide.

Pre rinsed
Added solution, SH-30oz water 3oz SH
SHy- 32oz water 3oz SHy
PH- 32oz water 3oz PH
Scrubbed in with brush (possibly my issue)
10 min dwell
Post rinse
No oxalic available so used some BarKeepers
Rinse

So my question is, is that fuzz on the wood considered furring?

Any suggestions on the process or the cause of the possible furring would be greatly appreciated.

On the hunt for some oxalic acid and SM.

You’ll get different answers from everyone you talk to. Here’s my $0.02:

Yes you fuzzed it. On that wood, a hand brush will fuzz it.

SH will just make it brighter by burning the wood fibers; won’t do anything to actually clean it.

Sodium Hydroxide will clean it but you need to need to go more like 1/2+ per gallon. Then you’re rinsing with literal garden hose pressure… if you even look at it funny, it’ll fuzz. An it’ll turn black so after rinsing, you’ve gotta put on oxalic acid to shift the pH back to earth. It’s terrifying and dangerous and I don’t recommend it.

Don’t recommend Potassium hydroxide unless you’re trying to remove fat/oil stains (burgers… ).

Why not try sodium percarbonate? Put a couple gallons of warm water in a bucket, put in so much SP powder that it doesn’t totally dissolve, and apply it with a mop or sponge. Let it it a bit, then do it some more. Eventually, rinse it with a black (soaper) tip. If you do it on a mild and sunny day, most folks are blown away by how clean and bright (but not bleached) sodium percarbonate can get soft, finicky wood to be.

Thanks for the tips @OutsideCleaner. Have to track down some SM and/sodium percarbonate.

Yes.

Hydroxide is only needed for stripping. It is the most likely to fur. If you don’t need to strip it use SH or sodium metasilicate or even percarbonate. SM and percarb are less likely to fur.

But all wood is different and sometimes it’ll fur regardless.
