We do a few iron wood decks a year. We do one yearly.
New client has a massive deck that has not been maintained in 10+ years.
What is your approach with iron wood? If you want to talk off the forum I am happy to provide my number.
Thanks

I’ve never heard of ironwood but I’m giving this thread a bump hoping somebody who has sees it.

thanks Thad.
I know I can clean it the way we have, but believe there is a better long term care procedure. figured I would make my annual post here.
Any input on or off here is great, either way I will survive.
Thad, I think Dave is referring to Ipe - I think.

Is it ipe, Dave?
Finished or just naturally gray?

yes IPE.
Every client we have out here calls it “iron wood” and several sellers on their websites call it the same
Hi Dave,
New member, old wood guy. AFAIK, the term “Ironwood” generally means ipe’. Very hard wood. Clean and seal every year.
I cannot count the # of customers over the years that wanted ipe’ restored and stained. The wood will last longer than their home without stain. It sinks in water, it has the same fire rating as low grade concrete. Ipe’ has been on a section of the Atlantic City boardwalk for over 50 years without service.
It needs no intervention. Let it gray to a fine patina over the summer. Prep it by cleaning the next spring if they want a “new” look.
Otherwise, leave it alone.
Rick!
Welcome to the forum and to the PWRA.
For those of you who don’t know Rick Petry of Windsor Wood Care is wood restoration royalty. And a heck of an awesome guy.

Rick,
Thanks for the information. After posting this we did not have a single request for it this year. Typically we get a small group.
While I see you view point, what if a client says they want it cleaned. How would you clean it?
We’ve applied SH and gone board by board. Always a beautiful cherry red when wet.
