How to stop wood from furing

Hey guys, so I know the process for wood deck cleaning, pre-wet, apply chem, rinse with 800-1,200 psi then brighten with oxalic acid and rise well. It’s my understanding with this method sometimes a deck will fur and sometimes it won’t. So minus using sodium precarb how do you stop or reduce the wood from
Furing? What causes it exactly and why do some decks do it and others don’t?

Don’t put bleach on it. Don’t prewet it. That’s like folks that prewet siding. Totally against common sense. If the chemical can’t work into the wood, you gotta use more pressure. Bleach doesn’t go on pressure treated wood. Use potash or other lye soap diributive and you can rinse with garden hose, no furring. Even better, just tell folks you don’t do decks, you’ll make a lot more money in the end.

Reduce it by using proper technique and the right % of the right chems.

Every deck is different.

It happens because the wood is reacting either to the chem being used or the pressure being applied.

I’ve seen the grain raise up (after being sanded) simply from the stain being applied (usually on new wood). It’s just how wood is.

No decks, no fences, no wood period, and I will never go back

I get it, and you guys are right but I’m trying to grow this business and I’m in my first season and I’m having a hard enough time getting the phone to ring as it is. So One day, hopefully I’ll be able to turn down gutter cleaning and decks or fences and just concentrate on vinyl siding house washing. Until then unfortunately I gotta take the jobs as they come.

We made that decision the beginning of this year, great decision

Best lesson you’ll learn is that not all work is good work

and what work you take, and at the price-point you take it, is pretty much going to be your destiny. It’s very hard to change that down the road.

100%

I basically made a quality of life decision over the last 18 months to completely stop dealing with wood, no pressure washing and no staining. Also stopped doing roof washes.

We only do simple services that are easily trainable and replicated. No add ons and no “while you’re here’s”. Makes life so easy and haven’t lost any revenue.

I feel like I’m shaping lives

I don’t mind doing walking surface of a deck, especially when it’s moldy and green. The slats and rails are the real pain. Trex especially comes out nice when it’s grey blotched with mold.
