How to stop oil leak on gear box

This is so much easier with actual voice than writing lol.

Yeah, not so easy typing and explaining stuff. I didn’t realize you were only talking about seals that had to be installed when installing on a pump. That seal installed from the factory shouldn’t be leaking yet. He hasn’t had it that long. I guess it’s possible. I don’t think the engine is that old either but I believe it’s a Predator if I remember right. I would think that crank seal would go before the gear box seal.

Hey @Clean_Blue. Touch the oil with your finger and see if it’s engine oil. If so, take the engine back for an exchange.

The engine oil level hasn’t changed but I just added gear oil yesterday. It looks like the gear oil too. In the pic you can see it dripping. Also I am definitely exchanging it but not till the season is over.

To me it looks like it’s coming from underneath the back cover of the predator engine, these engines at the assembly line only need to fire up and run for a few seconds to be a PASS at the manufacturing plant. Also that drain plug you have if it’s a stainless washer you need to replace it with a copper washer stainless (what it looks like) has no crushing properties against aluminium. Clean up the engine oil and put a bit of painters tape on the rear housing of the engine you’ll know exactly if it’s leaking from there with drip marks.

Never mind I just saw the drip mark hanging.

If he has to keep adding gear oil it almost has to be that factory seal on the gear box, doesn’t it?

That gear box isn’t that old @Clean_Blue. I’d call Envirospec and see what they say. You would think it would have at least a one year warranty.

Absolutely will be that seal if oil needs to be topped up, these are sealed units oil should only be replaced never topped up.

It’s been leaking for a while. I just figured out where it was coming from. It took a while for gear box oil to show it was low. I will call envirospec Monday. I figured it it’s from engine to gear box it’s a gasket missing or not tight enough. I tightened it as much as I can and still leaking.

No gasket is needed between the gear box flange and engine. If oil is leaking there it’s either the engine crankshaft seal or the gear box crank seal. The engine crank seal is easy to replace. You just pull the pump/gearbox off. Pry the seal off of the base of the crankshaft, and slide the new one over the crankshaft and tap into place. A little lube helps. I think on the gear box crank seal you’d have to pull the gear box apart and disassemble to replace seal. Not sure what tools are needed but you might need a press and some pullers.

Sounds like a possible ā€œbadā€ gear box then.

I have a Predator to gear box to Udor pump. Same problem. I believe engine has this flaw. My mounting plate is always wet. I hate it but I haven’t done anything about it. Great engine and pump makes good money and durable but very annoying and messy. I always have oil on the truck.

Dang, I we just going to get that 22hp predator. Scratch!

Had a belt drive he’d be dripless bout now.

I hope your wrong but you described my machine. I’m gonna exchange the motor this fall and hopefully Envirospec has some advice for the gearbox.

You get it figured out @Clean_Blue ?
Sorry for your troubles man.

I purchased a Predator for a rear tine tiller I had. I think it was the tiller. Anyways, I when I was at the store I was kind of up in the air about buying it or a Duromax and casually mentioned that when I was chatting with the store manager. The store manager told me that with a Predator you can buy the extended warranty, replace it a day before it expires, purchase another extended warranty, and repeat the process. You can also mod the engine and it doesn’t void the warranty. You can add mods to get 32 hp out of the 22 hp engine. There’s really no need to mod it for pressure washing but sure would be fun.

I can see having a belt drive for hot just because a lot of fuel pumps are ran by belts. There really isn’t a need for a belt drive for cold water. Gear drives are great for truck builds due to the smaller footprint. If you haul a trailer footprint isn’t as big of an issue. Pros and cons to each I guess. I have a gear drive but I’d be okay with a belt drive too.

This is a common issue on gear drives, they leak and the shaft seal… its not a bad repair though, I just re sealed my udor and it cost me like $40 with seal and fluid…

If its an oring, its gonna get some black rtv a little tho. It works with adequate prep. On mine, since its a tiny bit a an angle, comes out the vent a bit. I may have a leak by the pump, but havent checked the bolts yet to be certain if thats it.
