Has never been washed. I may actually walk away from this one. Thoughts from anyone?
I have cleaned a handful of aluminum homes now. I’ve only accepted the jobs with the understanding that the owner intended to paint afterwards… so no harm/no foul if things did go south. So far, I have not noticed any negative effects using a weaker house wash mix and lighter pressure (standing further back) then typical. Use common sense and be careful around known problem areas. Just let them know that there is oxidation and though your soft washing shouldn’t make it worse, it can “reveal” what wasn’t previously seen once it’s clean.
Thanks @OhioFloMo - I have washed a lot of these over the years myself, but not quite this bad. Notice the shutters were not removed when they were painted. Also note the pitting on the one picture.I always washed these low pressure and weaker sh mixture. My fear is I always prewet shutters, these may actually start to bleed down the siding, creating a real nightmare The pitting is not going to come off with a housewash. Over 40 years old and never washed. I am thinking I do not want their problem to become my problem. I will not do this without a waiver signed by the homeowner- even if they not not plan on repainting. I politely asked why not consider new siding with the age and state of what is currently on this home.
What @OhioFloMo said……I only do if paint is going on afterword’s otherwise I pass……
Thank you folks appreciate the input. Any idea what would have caused the pitting seen in the one photo. I know a housewash is not going to fix that. And it would probably still show if home is repainted after a wash.
How close are you to salt water? Most likely just airborne pollutants that static bond to the aluminum. They will not got away with house washing… I’ve heard hot water and degreaser can remove some of the bing but then you need an epoxy and paint to seal it again
Dartmouth Nova Scotia Canada. Atlantic ocean within 5 miles of me. I will discuss again with home owner what expectations to be expected with 40 year old aluminum, and if they are willing to sign a waiver stating such. Thanks again all for the feedback.
