Hiring is So Much Fun (not)

We have helpers where I work in the oilfield, and it doesn’t matter how much we raise the starting pay ,we can’t get good hands. Most quit within a month. So most of the time I do my job and half of theirs . That mostly why I need to try this . Years ago we could train a hand and within a year make him an operator ,people say it’s the kids of this generation ,I don’t know.

This is the key to finding good employees, one has to keep their eyes open . See a good employee giving you great customer service , slip him a card . Great employees are out there , they’re out there working for someone else . They’re not unemployed sitting at home on Facebook

That’s true , I had a kid was a great hand, told the boss to give him a raise or some one will still him away. Sure enough someone saw how hard he worked and offered him more money.

We had a great helper last year for window cleaning, paid her very good rate, but this year she let us know she wanted a “grown up job” working at…a bar.

Next thing you know she’ll be running for Congress!

Where is this? I can’t make $400/day working part time at another department. That’s not bad

The window cleaning side is harder, Not everyone has the eye for detail or care! I’ve had people help me clean some windows before and have absoluetly hated it!

Yep. Around here you’re lucky to get $15 an hour for an 8 hour shift.

This would make a great reality TV show, one that I would actually watch haha

Heck, I wouldn’t even know about 8 hour shifts. We are 24/48’s here. I can’t even get that kind of money with OT

We were 24.5 hour shifts. Lot of guys worked part time 8 hour shifts at volunteer departments for day time coverage. $400 a day is about right for full time guys though.

I left in 2006 at $25 an hour but we only got paid for 17 out of 24.5 hours

Ah, yea wasn’t thinking about that. I did that years ago. But at most departments around me your lucky to get over $10 an hour no matter if for 8 hours or for a full 24. I work in one of the nicer cities in my state, and we are one of the lowest paid departments in the state. Go figure. But, I am an officer and a medic so I can’t complain. Once that officer pay kicks in and my medic stipend, its not to bad. Hate it for the new guys though and it makes hiring quality people hard. I wonder how I did it for so long sometimes

I am hoping you guys have a very low cost of living.

No one should get paid $10 hr to risk their life. That’s criminal.

I pay $125-$150 a day for 6 straight hours of work. But I don’t pay drive time . And I live in FL the low wage state

Pretty sure you have to pay drive time. Travel Time Under The FLSA | Fair Labor Standards Act

It’s built in to there pay I guess. I only scheduled 6 hours of work per day sometimes it’s 15 minutes away and sometimes it’s 3 hours. Either way they are hired knowing it’s a daily rate . Some days will just require more travel than others. I think people prefer to know they will make a certain amount every day instead of worrying about hours. I find hourly employees to be slower than piece work employees. And piece work employees to be less concerned about quality than hourly employees. This way seems to work better for me than other ways

People should get paid what they agree to accept. Keep in mind. Being a FF in real life is not like on TV.

Oh yeah I don’t think it applies to if you pay a day rate.
