Had a gutter cleaning + house wash + driveway today. Got started 4 hours than I wanted because of some pretty terrible news this morning. Nobody’s dead but still got going later.
Cleaned the gutters fine and had a weird feeling about the paint and hardie board. Did a 3% test spot about 1x1ft on the back of the house and let it sit for 5 minutes. Washed off and no color change at all. I figured if I’m downstreaming at 0.8% I’ll be golden. Washed the house, got to the eastern side and did the same, ran back to the trailer and cut off the bleach, started rinsing and saw the color change in the picture above. No clue how it happened and the rest of the house is fine. The spray pattern is really strange too because I used my low pressure fan nozzle to apply the sh and this looks like some very creative artwork that wouldn’t come from a fan. The house was oxidized but every other side is fine.
The homeowner is out of town and is aware of the issue. I’m planning on fixing it and doing right by the customer but I’m not sure what happened here so I don’t know how to fix it. That being said, I’ve had my insurance for 5 months now and pay around $200/mo. If I can fix it without contacting them I would really like that but I don’t know what my options are. Always appreciate any help y’all can give, many thanks.
That doesn’t look like anything you could have done unless you spilled gutter cleaner on it. You’re right, weird pattern. You try rubbing it or anything?
Sure did. The weird thing is that you can see the a lot of oxidation and similar color change in the before pictures but it wasn’t noticeable at all once I finished washing. I’ll attach some more befores in here and y’all can zoom in and see.
You think oxidation? I was worried it was sherwin williams but I’ve memorized all their organic pigment colors in an effort to never wash the makeup off someone’s house. This color didn’t match but my heart still skipped several beats.
I’m not thinking oxidation. I’m no expert, but, I’d suspect that maybe some of the paint pigments changed colors when they or the board itself absorbed water. Let it dry for a few days and then come back to see how it looks.
Also, you have no way of knowing that perhaps last year little Timmy spilled his jug of bubble mix all over the side of the home. Perhaps that’s having an adverse reaction. Or the lawnmower’s exhaust blew oil all over that side. Or, maybe the homeowner cleaned up that mess with something that had left a residue that is now showing.
Lighting difference. Sun was just past setting and it put a weird hue on it. Heres a picture of the same side from 30 mins earlier. This is a few feet to the right of the modern artwork
All reasonable explanations. I’m going back tomorrow afternoon because I have time and would like to sleep easy at some point. I’ll give an update then
About 40% of my house washes are hardie board. If it’s the factory applied stuff you’re golden, which most builders have gone to around here past 5 years. It’s pretty impervious to about everything. I spray with straight bleach testing, use acid all the time on, degreaser, etc and it’s fine.
I wonder if the painters or whoever on that window above could have used something. Why is that window blue and the rest white?
That window above is in the glass block style you see in bathrooms of older buildings. It is the only one of that kind in the house. I know these kinds of windows are a pain to install BUT judging on the general quality of the home its likely that the window is plastic.
