Figured I’d bump this old thread vs. start a new one. Tracked down, what I believe to be a good deal on a project GX660. It’s off a generator, so it has a side mount muffler instead of overhead… obviously someone (honda?) deemed this as an okay setup, but would I be better off swapping to a overhead for any reasons apart from location or should I save the $150/175 and not worry about swapping it?
Generator engines have a conical shaft.
Correct, I need to crack open the crankcase anyways to replace the camshaft and governor assembly so I was going to swap in a 1-1/8" shaft while I was in there.
Finally got a chance to go out and look at the generator engine. Got to talking with the guy and mentioned I was really looking for a straight shaft. He says to hold on a sec and comes back with a cart of 7 or 8 gx630’s in boxes… all of them used on concrete cutting machines. Missing some parts (mainly control module/govenor cable). Was able to get two of them for $500… 7.8 and 12.3 hours on them according to the tags, and apart from being dirty with concrete dust they look to be actual hours. Still have the protective film over the labels and what not as well.
If all is true, you stole those. Good find!
He’s got 5 more… might be worth the drive up to Ohio
