Good Article About Hauling Bleach

Thanks for the article Rick. A lot of excellent info that I did not know. I never would have thought about having to check the date and swap out an IBC tote which I kind of planned on using. Sounds like it might be cheaper in the long run to just buy a regular horizontal leg water tank unless they can expire too.

Class A hasmat endorsement is good for 4 years in Ohio. I just did my background check and renewal paperwork this week. I’m not sure about other states but an Ohio DOT officer is not going to bother someone in a pickup truck with a trailer unless they are really asking for it. The main revenue maker for Ohio is log violations, especially since they can check most class a trucks via Bluetooth. Being in a pickup you are exempt from logs under a certain weight. That alone will keep them away. Unless your doing something stupid like carrying a 30 foot ladder 20 feet off your trailer with 1 strap and no flag, or draining liquid off your trailer all over the road. Even then I’m pretty sure they will only approach you if your truck is lettered. Normally they will radio OSP to handle it. If your truck is lettered in Ohio they can fine you for not having a registered DOT number. If DOT pulls you over for that they will run a full inspection and then you might get hammered for hazmat or weight but I can’t see it being a stand alone offense. Just my .02

That’s weird I always thought if total gross was over 10k you had to be DOT. Plenty of pt cruisers running around with logos on them, they have to have DOT numbers too? I know it varies from state to state, just curious

Taxation is theft…avoid the highways

It does vary from state to state. Being from IL I thought I would have to get a cdl if over 10,000 lbs. There are a lot of states like that. Believe it or not IL is one of the few states where I don’t need anything as long as I’m under 26,000 lbs and don’t cross state lines.

How many contractors on this forum have been cited for this violation?

@Patriotspwashing I don’t think I worded that statement correctly. If you have commercial plates and your combination (truck and trailer) has the potential to be over 10, 000 pounds (gvw) then a dot number is required. An average 1/2 ton gotta be in the 4-5 k lbs range so if your trailer is rated for 5-6k lbs it’s a possibility you could be required to have a dot number.
@JimLuke I dout many

Yah, it is confusing, I’m glad you brought the topic up, I’ve been dreading getting my NPR inspected for DOT numbers. After your post I did more research, before I was going off what friends with lawn businesses have told me. It looks like my state passed a law 4 years ago changing the DOT is not needed under GVRW of 26k and staying in state.

I am required to have a dot number in MA. I have a half ton pickup and 14ft enclosed trailer. They made me get one last year. I paid out about $1000 for the new plates, inspections, all of the dot stuff to keep on the truck(fire ext. first aid, ect.) and I have to buy a UCR cert every year so I can go into CT. Now I have to keep work logs and I am subject to an audit. What a pain in the a**. I should of just got a 250 or 2500 with a 8ft bed with air bags and set up a skid unit.

Big money grab. Do you have to stop at the scalehouse now as well?

And taxation IS theft.

I don’t know. I do have to follow all of the same rules as a large trucking company. They told me they don’t differentiate between a small guy and a large company. I got the larger trailer towards the end of last year and I didn’t have it lettered up. I will see how this year goes with the lettering if I get pulled over for inspection.

I read the article again and while shopping for a new tank. (Not buying from NT they just have the clearest descriptions) this tank has a specific gravity max of 1.7. SH is 1.2-1.3.

It sounds like labels and note going over the 100 gallon capacity are the ticket.

Says for storage. Doesn’t mention anything about transporting

I am shopping for new ones too.
But cant decide between, a legged one or square one.
Tractor supply has NORWELCO 35gl for $109.
A water tote wont get you stopped i guess, since noone will think you will be transpirting chemicals that way.

Awesome and informative, i will make needed changes to comply and be legal.
