Gear drive units

To those running a gear drive unit. I recently swapped my 5.5 belt drive for a 8 gear drive and not sure what gear oil to use in the gear box. Anyone know what should be used?

This is what I’ve ran in mine since new. If I’m wrong I’m sure someone will correct me!

What hp engine are you running it with?
How do you like it so far? Psi?

I was told 90w by Russ Johnson… but I haven’t changed mine yet.

It’s a Honda GX690 so 22hp I believe. 3500psi. Haven’t used it but a couple of times since I got it but so far I’m loving it. Huge difference over my 5.5 on flatwork.

Now I have a question. Udor specifies 90w gear oil. What I find in stores is 75-90w, 80-90w, and 85-90w. Also I see the options of Hypoid and Synthetic. Are these acceptable? Thanks!

Obviously I don’t know the answer to that so I will be interested in the answer as well.

J.N. Equipment sells Chevron’s RPM 80-90w oil for use in gear drive units. Apparently it 8s gl4 and gl5 compliant and is Hypoid compatible also.

I wouldn’t overthink it as long as it’s an SAE 90 weight lube. GL-4 or 5, synthetic, hypoid, etc shouldn’t matter as these boxes are spur or helical gears operating at much lower pressures than an automobile tranny or differential. It’s not like this is going into a $5k Allison!
