Galvalum Roofs

Any tips on cleaning these??? So far, I’m reading that a DS mix should be used only and to not let it dry, especially in the sun. And always rinse. However, I’m also seeing opinions that any SH at all should be avoided on these. So my guess now is to use SP. I’ve wanted to try this on a roof anyway.

Using SH is a gamble. I have cleaned several successfully using SH, but I had one this past year that I pre wet, used normal house wash mix, and it instantly began to remove the finish. So I no longer clean anything galvalum.

What about Sodium Percarbonate?

What about Sodium Percarbonate?

Just about every manufacturer’s site I could find says soap and water only, applied with a pole and brush.

I pretreated with SP & surfactant to loosen up but ended up having to punch a time clock w/pole & brush.

What about painted galvalum?

What about painted galvalum?

I am able to clean a majority of painted metal roofs and siding with normal HW mix, but I wouldn’t use a brush unless you plan on doing an oxidation removal. I just don’t clean the bare metal siding.

Kind of an oddity, since galvalume is usually chosen by folks for the way it ages/patinas, so wouldn’t likely be painted. It can be, I’d imagine, but like any painted surface you’d have to test spot it and make a decision from there…during the busy season, probably a “no thank you”.

It seems like a coat of paint would protect the metal from any corrosion or discoloration that would happen w/SH mix.

I’m reading that they are factory painted now. I’m seeing these both painted and non painted going up like hotcakes in my area on residential homes. I know it’s a zinc/ aluminum dipped steel but there’s also colors available and the galvalum is being marketed with a 25 year warranty whereas the galvanized has basically no warranty.

I did one this morning, it was my first one and I had no issues.

Equipment used: 8/3500 cold water and 12v

Solution used: ~ 1.5/2% SH with Surfactant

Process used: pre-wet like no other, applied solution with 12v, let dwell for 3-5min, misted while it dwelled so nothing dried, rinsed like my life depended on it. No issues at all.

It does look great. The one’s in my area don’t have any of those bolts on the exterior. I think they have a way they are assembled using interlocking panels etc.
