First fence cleaning

Hello! My name is David. I have been cleaning family friends driveways for the past couple of months. After initially seeing a growing interest for others to have their concrete cleaned I decided to make an investment in buying a larger machine and surface cleaner(4 gpm 4000 psi machine with a classic cleaner). I have familiarized myself with sodium hypochlorite and apply it after every wash.

I recently have been asked to clean a fence to prep for restaining. It has a solid stain applied. They are applying almost the same color but a little darker stain is what I was told. The owner had applied something similar if not, the same product as Behrs all in one wood cleaner. There was a white looking coating left in the area that he had done. He just wants it washed free of dirt and algae to restain.

After doing extensive research I gathered I should be able to use a downstreamed housewash mix with SH and dawn soap to clean the fence. Apply and let dwell for about 10 min never letting the surface get dry. I have 12.5% that I use for driveways.

My questions are:
-Am I heading in the right direction?
-Any mixing ratio recommendations?

I have attached a couple pictures of the fence. Thanks in advance for help.

My mix would be some bleach, some water, and some F-18 from pressure tek. Direct apply, dwell, rinse. Spray with an oxylic mix to neutralize the caustic.

Thanks Tim! I apologize that I failed to mention that he did specifically say he didn’t want it stripped. I understand to strip is when I would use hydroxide. So would I just use the bleach mixed with water?

Can anyone help me with figuring out my ratio for the 12.5% SH in a spray bottle? I believe my goal is 1.5%.

How many oz is your spray bottle?

Hi Racer! My bottle is approximately 256 oz(2 gal). I ended up doing 1.75 gal of water and .25 gal of 12.5% SH. I additionally put in two squirts of dawn. It cleaned up very nicely. However, I’d like to hear your recommendations as well. I’m all about learning and hearing what others would do.

You’re dead on. Simply divide your amount you want by what you think your SH is to give you 1% and then multiply by what you want. For example 256/12.5 = 20.5 *1.5 = 31 oz of SH. Put that in first and add water till you get to 256. I just usually use 10% unless really fresh, makes it easy to just figure in your head in 2 sec.

Thanks! Glad to know I did it right. I will keep those notes in mind in the future.
