Fee for water not turned on

Twice now this week I have shown up to a commercial job (a theater and a steakhouse) to do a bunch of flatwork and the water wasn’t turned on. At both places, I walked the job with the General Manager and explained how the water needs to turned on by the time I get there. I knew the water was turned off because I always check during my bid. Both of these jobs (along with most of my commercial work) I start and finish the jobs before the place opens so no one is there until I am just about finished.

I don’t have anything about in my contract about an Inconvenience Fee of some sort for showing up and not being able to perform the work. Does anyone charge a fee for this type of scenario?

Yes, I do. I even do it for residential. I charge 20% of the ticket. If you ever have pushback you just explain that you only have a limited number of appointments so each one you have to reschedule costs you money and that the 20% is a fraction of the lost income due to their irresponsibility.

I have only had that happen to me twice on residential. In the spring and they forgot to turn the spigots back on after winter. Both times they were very apologetic and I had other jobs I was able to fit in those time slots. But showing up at 5 or 6am to wash flatwork at a restaurant that opens at 11am just to find out the water is off is aggravating to say the least. Especially since I am far from a morning person
