Etiquette for scouting market prices

Is there an etiquette for scouting the prices of your competitors in your area?

Call them and ask. I talk to the 3 or 4 larger guys in my area all the time about prices and what we are charging

Never even thought about it. Charging the same feels weird. If you’re doing things that demand a premium charge what it’s worth.

I try to keep in touch with the smaller guys like me around here. I tell them what I charge and why. My hope is that they value themselves and don’t start undercutting everyone just to make a sale. That technique does have a final consequence that tends to end in failure though. So maybe I’m shooting myself in the foot. Seems like the right way to approach it. Plus it’s nice to not always feel like I’m at war with my competition. Regardless I’m cheaper than the big box brand washer…at twice the quality in my opinion. You should see some of the crap jobs they do here. And their prices are out of controll. I can’t believe they pull as much work as they do. Just goes to show ya that with a huge marketing budget and a few flashy salesman you can con people out of alot of money. I will never run my buisness that way! EVER!

We share a lot of work. About 80% of my residential calls i refer to someone else. I want to make sure they are charging my customers what I would and vice versa

Would love to get together for a beer sometime and talk about the business in our area. Would much rather work with than against

This past Spring myself and another contractor had a meeting at one of the local restaurants and got the word out to pretty much all the washers in our area. Kind of a meet and greet, had a nice dinner and got to know one another in a casual atmosphere. About 20 guys showed up, some whom I didn’t know and quite a few who I had seen around but didn’t know well. We all shared some ideas, kind of found out what each person’s specialty was, if they had one, etc. Got a couple of local suppliers to donate a couple of door prizes. It was a pretty successful. We’re doing it again probably in Feb this year. Lot easier to refer work, find help if you need it on a big job, and not have the market be so cut throat if you’ve had dinner and a few beers with your competition.
