I am in the process of writing out a customer contract for service.
I’d like to hear about your process - Do you have a contract or do you stick only to invoices or both?
Is a contract even recommended?
I heard a professional mention that he has in print on the contract “Cancelation Fee - $x”
What are some things that you include on your contract that have proven beneficial?
I don’t write up a contract for anything under $5k or so.
I charge a $100 security deposit for scheduling all new residential customers (sometimes 20% for larger jobs). That is effectively the cancellation fee, since I let them know they lose the deposit if they cancel without enough notice (“enough” depends on the job size; I let them know at time of booking)
It is a good idea to have a Terms of Service for all jobs. I haven’t gotten around to writing one up yet, but I do try and be as communicative as possible with customers about what to expect and not to expect.
