Dark Spots on wood after sodium hydroxide

I started using soapy water on concrete and other porous surfaces. Spray it in there and if oil based gets on there it will just sit on the surface. Just rinse off and you would never know

Yes sir, thatā€™s what weā€™re doing for driveway gates

Oh man, 29k is whereI want to be haha
But it seems staining work is what people have approached me here with in dfw the most.
I the guy is dead set on the semi-trans pecan colored readyseal. I used it on an old deck and it turned out great. I will warn him that some flaws may show since it is not super dark, and try to push a russet brown type color (ozco stain is 65 per 5 gals and good quality stuff) to mask some of the impurities.
From now on I am not even going to show them lighter colors unless is is perfect wood. Live and learn i suppose.
I am wanting to get to staining full time.

Turned out reareally nice on this other older wood, but still want to try and push him darker.

What are you using to shoot your stain?

@SurfaceTherapy What do you think about TWP wood stain?
For five years working part-time while in college / grad school, thatā€™s the only semi-transparent my boss would use.
Itā€™s hard to find out here now, but itā€™s still around.
Itā€™s a very forgiving stain and seems to last quite awhile.

I have used it once on a customers deck recoat. It has linseed oil in it, which from what I have heard promotes mold growth. Not sure if thatā€™s true, but that deck certainly was dirty, and we have almost no mold issues where I am located. It is pretty high in mineral spirits also.

Linseed will feed the mold if you donā€™t get rid of it prior to staining. As for the OZCO stain, you better get all you can now, OZCO merged with Fortress and they are selling their stain on Craiglist in Dallas. Donā€™t buy into everything you see on the Stain and Seal University FB page but thatā€™s on anything.

@marinegrunt @surfacetherapy are yall using the same sprayer stain and seal uses in his YouTube video. Cost like $800 i think.

I think so. Mine is a Graco 390

Iā€™m not but I believe @MDA1775 has it in his inventory of different sprayers. I donā€™t see why youā€™d have to purchase their specific sprayer.

No i meant to say are yall useing a setup like his. That thing is misting like crazy. Id end up staining the nieghbors dog and car lol. Definitely not something to use on a windy day.

It would definitely be a upgrade from my 12volt system i built for staining. Maybe i would enjoy it more.

I just hate the prep work of staining mostly to much like painting. Im probably doing alot of unnecessary stuff though because i seen he prewets what he doesnā€™t want stain on and then rinses it right off after.

Theyā€™re just called airless sprayers. They do have over spray but itā€™s not hard to keep from making a mess. Definitely donā€™t stain on too windy of a day. Itā€™s so much faster and easier using one. I was going to give up on staining until I got one. You might spend a few hours hanging plastic and taping but you can haul when you stain. The first deck I did with an airless sprayer was a 12ā€™ X 24ā€™ upper level deck with a million spindles and it took be 2-3 hours to do two coats and I back brushed each coat. That was my first sprayer job too so it probably took me longer than it should have. It wouldā€™ve taken me two days to do by hand. I spent 3-4 hours cleaning it including underneath. Came back the next morning, spent 2 hours hanging plastic and taping, 2-3 hours staining, and a half hour tear down.

Iā€™m not sure if Iā€™ll always stain but thereā€™s really good money in it. Even if you donā€™t like it itā€™s a great way to fill your schedule until you grow your business enough to where you can drop it if you want to. Iā€™ll probably keep doing it and just hire help instead of turning down the work. Why let someone else get that money? :money_mouth_face:

There is a fog for sure. Just have to prep and plan accordingly. Airless atomizer the stain so small it really floats. 12v has bigger droplets on surfaces, so more noticeable. Pros and cons to both

We started using these air induction flat fan spray nozzles with the teejet brass wands for the big drops that didnā€™t atomize.

With a very simple lil Pumptec set up.

Iā€™ve not noticed much mold myself on the decks that have already had TWP on them.

I just finished one that had been stained two different times with TWP and they wanted to stick with it again. Itā€™s the one @marinegrunt gave me some tips on cleaning.
Itā€™s the one I asked for some help here:

https://pressurewashingresource.com/community/t/sodium-hydroxide-and-metal-spindles-on-a-deck/

Iā€™ll swing back by the job site and get an ā€œafterā€ pic and post it. It turned out really nice.

@marinegrunt What sprayer do you use?

What do you primarily useā€“airless or 12v?

Graco 390 airless

I for penetrating oil, I primarily use my Honda powered GP pump system. 300ā€™of 3/8" poly braid, brass wands and tee jet tips. Isoray at about 150psi. 12v 2.2 GPM is a back up but I always use it for sealing concrete, stone etcā€¦ Graco Hiboy 495, 100ft of spray hose, contractor gun, multiple extensions, adjustable angle head, tips based product, wind etc. Yesterday I stained two fences and an 18*18 pergola at three different locations. Worked from 9-4:30. I have 500ā€™ of 8 for today but itā€™s probably too damp today. Lots of ways to peel a grape.
