Convert chemical tank to buffer tank...or get new

I searched this but didn’t come up with anything. I currently have a 50 gallon tank that I store SH in that I thought about washing out and using for a buffer tank when I install a new 5.5gpm gear driven pump. It worries me a bit to use a used tank for a buffer even if I wash it out a bunch of times. New IBC totes are pretty cheap here but somewhat overkill for 5.5gpm and my 5x8 trailer. Has anyone ever converted a used chemical tank to a buffer tank?

Are you worried about any SH going through the pump? If so rinsing it out will take care of it. Heck, you could probably just empty the sh, fill it up with water, and use it. It would be so diluted it wouldn’t hurt anything. I’d still rinse it out a couple times though.

Dump a bottle of rubbing alcohol in it and rinse it out. Good to go

Great…thanks for the info!

Buy a pack of pH strips from a pet store. Rinse your tank well, then fill it with water. Leave it in there for 24 hours, then take the pH. You should be between 6-8. If you aren’t the plastic may be infused with the higher pH of the SH.
