Oh yeah same here. Gotta love those days.
I tell them now, I can’t guarantee bottom 5-6" of the wall or foundation and explain why . They laugh and agree.
I keep a scrap piece of plywood around for retaining walls and whatnot. Just throw it down there and slide it along as I go. Works well.

I should have grabbed the plywood yesterday - I hit a pile of red ants, didn’t notice it cause my legs were so covered in mud and thought, ya know, @DisplacedTexan you should carry a scrap piece of plywood around.

Oh man I know that pain. Got into a fire ant colony when I was a kid and now I “relocate” them with starting fluid and a torch when I see them.
But, yes, a 2’x4’ section of scrap plywood with a short piece of rope to drag it along can be a lifesaver. It won’t keep everything off you but will keep the majority off.
