We used F9 on a slate tile roof and it was cleaning rust off well. We thought we had rinsed it well but going back a day later this F9 Dried on the grey slate and leaves a white streaked haze over the slate. Does anyone know the solution to fixing this?
Got any photos?

Did you just use F9 to clean the slate or a roof mix?
Pictures would be helpful.
You may also want to contact Craig Harrison since he’s the creator of F9 which is one of the best cleaning chemicals that has come out over the last bunch of yrs.
Hey Tony, it was good to talk to you yesterday, sorry I couldn’t be more of a help. Just wanted to see if you found a solution yet? Looking at this picture, I would still say that the haze was caused by the combination of surfactant in the mix and the hot slate causing it to dry quickly, leaving a haze. I think the first thing I’d try was cleaning it again with just SH and water, no surfactant. Hope it works out for you.
Hi Eric, Thank you for your help. I am trying some other Slate roof forums that Chris referred me to. Bleach does not touch it. I will let you know when and if I find a solution. Since you can’t see the hazing when the roof is wet It may be that a stain is going to be the best fix? Trying to find a cleaner first though.
How did things turn out? I’m looking at some slate jobs too, and would like to know how to avoid the haze

You do not want to let F9 dry on anything but concrete. Use a weaker solution, like 2:1 water to F9 on stone and always test first. Use 2-3 light applications (if you need more than one) over a few minutes then rinse. If the rust is still there then repeat. Again, NEVER LET IT DRY on stone and do not go strong on your mix unless you have to. TEST TEST TEST, if you aren’t used to what you are working on.
The directions for various substrates are also given on our website, www.front9restoration.com under “technical data.”
If you aren’t sure what to do you can always call or text me. I am here to help!

We ended up buying a new roof. We did use Enrich and seal which helped significantly, however you can still see a yellow haze on the right side of the roof.
A few lessons from this job were: 1. Like Craig said test F9 in an inconspicuous spot. Give that spot a good 2 days to really see what will happen as some of these chemicals just keep working even when rinsed thoroughly.
2. I would not recommend using any chemical when it is over 90% on a dark roof as the chemical can bake on the roof as surface temp gets much higher than air temp. 3. The guys who do a lot of slate roofs say they don’t use any detergent on the roofs as this pulls the oils out of the stone.
There are other lessons in the situation but hope these ones help a bit.
Ouch! Sorry you had to take that hit! Just took a big one myself on a botched window job, thanks to a subcontractor…Thank you for sharing the lessons learned though!
All the best to you!

Looks like SH mix w/ no surfactant is the way to go on slate, according to what I’ve been seeing on the threads. No experience myself yet though.

Did your GL Insurance pay? Did they give you a hard time about covering it?
