Cedar roof Oiling (restoring)

I have already cleaned a cedar roof and was wondering if anyone can give me advice on how I can oil the roof with the essential oils in a mix that I can apply either in my cleaning mix or just by itself with a fatboy pump. I don’t want to use a oil/stain on the roof because the customer wants the natural look and I also don’t want to paint the roof by walking all over it. It is a very steep roof and very very large. I just want to protect the roof from drying up and curling.

Thank you!

I’ve been ask to oil a cedar shake roof as well. But I can’t seem to get to people to agree on weather a roof is to be oiled. Very confusing

Have you checked out any of the manufactures’ websites? That would be the number one stop, in my opinion.

I’ve checked multiple sites. But oiling cedar shakes is very opinionated . Both side have great arguments.

This is a great suggestion. Bruce seems like an awesome and very knowledgeable guy! He is not a proponent of oiling, that I know of, but he will help you out a lot.

I’ve chatted Bruce , I’ve got a meeting with him in a few weeks. But I’m looking at the pros & cons of the opinions on oiling cedar shake material.

I would go with whatever he says about it, personally. The only other reliable source, in my opinion, would be the manufactures’ websites.

Thank you , I appreciate your thoughts & quick response.

I had several calls last year on cleaning cedar shake , I turn them down , for a lack of experience and or knowledge . I’ve been researching , but not a lot of real proof on the pros & cons of oiling . I guess I’ll go with what Mr Sullivan will teach me.

Thanks agin
Terry

It’s nice to meet you as well. It gets real slow in the winter time , so I drive OTR , I’m in California today … But I’m hoping that 2015 will be the year , I can break free from driving trucks

Not sure if you have a game plan for this yet…but you might check out Cedar Shield. You can also buy pure cedar oil (expensive though). Bruce is generally correct about letting the cedar breathe, which is why I believe he suggests avoiding sealants (even though some would still allow the wood to breathe). Bruce has been washing cedar shakes for 4 or 5 years, and has done plenty of projects to warrant respect. However, you might consider also talking to someone who has many years of experience in full exterior wood restoration, including the application of treatments. There is a guy named Andy who works for Paul at the Powerwash Store who has lots of experience at fully restoring (cleaning and treating) cedar shakes.

Thanks for the info
