CAT Pump Running Hot

I have a CAT 66DX40G1I (4gpm) attached to a Honda GX390. I bought it used. It’s my back pressure washer, so I don’t use it very often. I have noticed that the pump gets really hot quickly even though I never go longer than a minute without squeezing the trigger. It gets so hot that it has caused multiple garden hoses to burst. Would changing the seals and o-rings fix this issue or could it be something else?

I’m my experience, your rod caps may be too tight. Perhaps someone swapped the crank to other side and put too tight. That will 100% make it so hot it will melt plastic.

I’m sorry for my ignorance but I don’t know the parts of the pump you are referring to. Can I send you a picture of it or is it something on the inside of the pump?

Different pump and pretty shaky camera work, but the basic idea…

I’m now getting time to watch the video. I have never let it sit without having water cycle through it. It’s possible the previous owner did. Are you thinking the ceramic pistons are cracked? If so, would that be noticeable when running the machine?

It could, hard to know without at least pulling it apart.

If any of the pistons are cracked there would likely be water leaking from under the head of the pump due to the cracked pistons cutting a groove in your low pressure seals.

It’s definitely not leaking water.
