Calling all GX390 experts

I run mine off a buffer tank (direct drives don’t pull water I know) and will park so that gravity is my friend. I’m going to try the spring fix @Innocentbystander posted because that’s what makes the most sense to me and hopefully that’ll resolve it.

found a gx690 8gpm set up. brand new all acccessories 3500 psi for $3,424 out the door. How does this sound? @anon1966941 @Innocentbystander

Can’t get 3500 from a 690 so it’s probably 3000 psi. For that price it probably has a general pump and an 8 or 10 GPM unloader you get what you pay for if you don’t put a lot of hours on it and know how to rebuild a general pump it might be a good deal for you

If i had it to do over again, i would NOT have gotten the general pump.

you’re right. general tsf2021.

Should I just go with a higher quality 5.5? I’m trying to stay in the $3500 range. Looks like to get a 690 with a better quality pump I’ll be well over $4k.

If you aren’t running it 10 hours a day and can watch a video on how to change the packings it isn’t a bad deal

The knock off mufflers pressure pro uses will fall off after awhile. When it does replace it with oem

I’m still part time with it. It would get used maybe 12-20hrs/week for a while.

go for it

I think that’s what I’ll do then unless a smoking deal on something new comes along before then. I need 2 more weeks to squeeze in some work. gotta limp my gx390 along until then. Going to try to fix it tonight

Glad I came across this conversation. I was interested in the gx690 with a 3500 psi general pump. Sounds like this would not be a good option. I guess I’ll be back to the drawing board. I only do residential as of now. So I’m only interested in cold water and a 3000 psi minimal pump.

Well did some trouble shooting on my 390 runs fine. I’m pretty sure it’s the pump that’s bad. It’ll run fine for about 3 minutes with a high pressure tip but then begins to bog ice it’s warmed up and dies. Restart. Runs for 15 secs dies. I took the pump off and the bearing does not spin as freely as I would think it should. It has some resistance. It’s a comet zwd4040. I don’t know a whole lot about these pumps but from what I’ve found do y’all think the pump has gone bad? How freely should that main bearing spin?

It’s not a bad deal. It’s just not meant for commercial work. By that I mean 50 plus hours a week with no maintenance except oil changes. If you are just washing 5 or 6 houses a day and take care of them they will be ok probably. For 5 or 6 hundred more you can bullet proof them.

I see. Sounds like it will be ok then. What would be the upgrades to make it bullet proof? Steel frame, oem exhaust?

[/quote]Did you run the motor without the pump to see if it solved the surging issue?

I did and it seems to run like it’s supposed to. Just singing at high RPM. So now I’m faced with a decision. Do I:

Buy a new pump and continue on and save back money

Upgrade wayyy before I wanted to. (I wanted to be in business at least a year before I plopped down $3500+ on a motor/pump)

Or schedule 3-4 jobs a day and rent one from Home Depot and make enough jack where I’m comfortable spending that 3500 on a 8gpm

Some of y’all that have been around a while lay some knowledge/advice on me. Kinda struggling with what I want vs need to survive my first year.

The pump won’t make it bog down. It might be running fine without pump attached because it isn’t under load. All guess work without putting hands on it though

Yes to those plus 20gpm unloader, unloader block, udor or landa pump.

I would find a local-ish shop and take it in for repair. The nearest to me is a 45 min drive but that’s why I have 2 machines. Sometimes you’re money ahead to have a good mechanic look at it.
