Buying new pump

Hi, I’m needing to replace my cat 66dx pump. I use the pressure washer almost daily. I’m a field mechanic on heavy equipment, and gas compressors . Wandering what the preferred brands are, and what to avoid? I found a decent price on new cat pumps on eBay . Is there a better place to purchase?
Thanks

Do you need the full 4000psi or can you live with 2500psi and upgrade to 5.5gpm?

Udor has a 5gpm 3000 psi that pairs up nicely with a gx390.

Thanks for the replies. Higher pressure seems to help when washing the coolers out on compressors . Also, my tank is only 100 gallons on my truck if that matters. I use a 12volt pump from tank to pressure washer.
I don’t know much about higher gpm lower pressure vs high pressure low gpm. Is there a big difference in the lower pressure?
I know my last pressure washer I had on here, was a small Honda 6.5 hp with 3000 psi pump, I want to say it was 2.5 gpm, but can’t remember. That thing was useless for my Work

Edit… just read an article on the differences of gpm vs psi . I would think I’m looking for the psi in my situation(stripping power)
Thanks

If you need psi and sticking with gx390 then get a 4gpm/4K psi gear drive pump…gear drive will last you longer and it will pull water from a tank. Either GP or Udor pumps will work well.

Thanks Barry, but I’m limited to a direct drive pump. This goes in my service truck, and I’m limited on space. Air compressor, crane, welder etc, along with a 100 gallon water tank and 30 gallon air tank.
The way I have my setup, I’ve got a frame built on top of water tank, and my pressure washer is mounted to that, with a 7 gpm 12 volt pump to supply the water to pressure washer.
I have a belt drive mounted on a trailer with a 500 gallon water tank, I use for large coolers.
The washer in my truck is mainly for when I do pm,s on equipment, I wash them when I’m through, and also to wash out cooler sections. The washer is not how I make my money, It just keeps me from having to pull the trailer all the time. Some of my equipment is 3-400 mile drives, and I hate pulling a trailer all over.
I usually get a couple years out of the washer pumps with this setup. The GX390 still runs good, and I also have a new predator electric start engine I bought last year on sale, although I have no clue if the predator (Chinese I think) is worth a flip. I had thought about just buying a new pressure washer complete, but that seems like a waste, since only the pump is bad.
Are the udor direct drives better than the cat, General , comet etc?
I have no clue on what brands to avoid. . I’d like to stay in the 5-600 dollar range or less if possible , since I know it will be disposable.
Thanks again

The gear drive takes up maybe 2 extra inches over a direct drive:

I did not know that. I’ll do some research. Thanks

Plus, you can ditch that 12v pump with a gear drive. It’ll only put out 2500psi though if that’s an issue. That extra water flow is quite a treat however, really rinses a lot faster.

But if you’re dead-set on 4000psi direct, the general consensus is the Udor lasts the longest. I have no personal experience with it however.

Building a new machine right now and just ordered an udor kc 21-28 gr. $900 shipped and with gear box from Dultmeier. No belts to fuss with and it’ll pull water. The udor will be around for your kids’ kids.

I’ll probably buy it’s slightly smaller brother. :+1:

That thing is a beast!

What motor did you put that pump on?

It’ll be on a GX 660 just like the other one.

If you’re asking if it’ll be on a predator the answer is no, because I love myself and this pump too much to do that to either of us.

Last week, had a record day. Between the subcontractors and myself we did 11 houses in 8 hours. A little over $2600 in my pocket. My best day ever on flat rate house washes with no upsells. Decided to build another machine and skid for the new guy instead of making him pull hoses and the other grunt work with the bucket of money.

I won’t lie to you… as the cheapest human alive… I’m tempted to buy the buy predator every time I’m in Harbor Freight to try it out based on your set up. I figure I’ve got a $700 tax deduction if it goes bad. But for some reason I just can’t take the plunge.

Does Harbor Frieght offer a warranty on those engines?

Their engines have a 2 year warranty but you only get one replacement.
