Business Licenses

Could someone help me out here? I’m stuck on something that is probably a pretty easy a question for you all. I’m all gung ho ready to go. I’ve got my LLC going online and finishing that up, have all my pressure washing knowledge I’m gaining and equipment purchases, but I’m stuck on the legalities of licensing.
I live in an unincorporated area, but am close to a metro area with tons of municipalities.
Do I have to go and spend $50-75 for each municipality I’m going to have a customer in each year? I don’t know how traveling service based businesses are treated versus brick and mortar storefronts? Is there just a county one or state?
Thank You.

NC doesn’t require licenses anymore, as they are considered an unfair tax. Before they were outlawed, I had about 30 licenses in NC and about that many in other states.

Don’t worry about it and wait for them to come after you. Most likely you’ll never get contacted. If you have a shop or storefront I would contact the city and see what they want.

We have to have them for most cities and counties here, that’s if you work in those areas. I have a bunch of them…

That’s weird, no licenses necessary here in Louisville area for PW/WC.

No occupational license in your area? That’s weird, I would think Jefferson county would have that?

Nope, we asked and it’s only for certain occupations like plumbers, etc.

So you don’t have a local tax to pay? Or a privilege fee to work in that area?

Yeah we have state and Louisville city tax. If you work and live in Metro it’s 2.2% on net profits. Live outside of limits it’s 1.8%.

Ironically California banned that practice.

Not HVAC, plumbers or electrician license. I thought he meant tax/fee license?

Yes, I think that’s what he was asking about…maybe not.

I think he means a general operating business license…aka unnecessary paycheck to .gov.

Yeah, I need those to operate in those jurisdictions. Tax/fee based licenses.

Oh…I see.

So you get a separate ‘license’ to operate in Fayette and surrounding counties? What if someone asks to do work in Richmond?

I have a Madison county license there. Each jurisdiction we work in requires you to register for a business license. Some you just pay a yearly fee, most others a % of your net profits from the work you performed there. A lot to keep up with, we work in central Kentucky so we file a lot of paperwork for all this…

What’s the actual purpose of these licenses? Is it strictly tax related? If you can be granted a license you can also be denied a license what are reasons they wouldn’t issue someone a licence?

Tax reasons…they want your money for working in their area. So…what can you do, it’s law…
