Best tape to seal off painted surfaces - no damage

I’m out of stucco tape. While the stucco tape did the job 99% of the time I had one instance where to took off some paint on a door. It was a nightmare trying to match the paint. It turned into a 1 week long ordeal. At the end of it all the customer was extremely impressed the work that was done to make it right. Several referrals from my screw up ultimately. Funny how that happens sometimes.

Anyway. I’m researching better options and would like to know what everyone else is using to tape stuff off, including painted surfaces.

I found this. It looks promising but I haven’t used it yet.

I’ve tried using regular blue painters tape but when it gets wet it doesn’t adhere. Does frog tape do better then the blue tape?

Have you tried exterior painters tape or the all weather?

Not yet. That’s what I linked to in the original post. It’s on the way.

Be careful with the tape you linked to. That’s the same exact product that took the paint off of the door. I think the paint job was not prepped right. I used it several times before.

I find with that tape, it’s best to put it on, wash, then take it off immediately. If you let it sit there for the rest of the wash it adheres too good.

Oh really? Thats strange i feel like painters tape sticks better than that poly tape. I just like the poly because its easier to deal with. Ill use with care now.

Yeah, I’ve had the poly take paint off the frame of a painted steel door at a commercial building. Fortunately the customer didn’t care as it wasn’t that noticeable. I only use the green painters tape now on painted surfaces and as Harold pointed out, I remove it soon after it gets wet.

On some surfaces it seems to. It has some polymer in it that protects against latex paint bleed making it quasi-waterproof. I have really good luck with the blue tape on most surfaces but I will use the frog on things I feel might be more delicate. It may not work any better but I feel better using it, lol.

Another cool feature is that the frog tape comes in a plastic container that keeps it dry and neat in the toolbox.

Frogtape is the best in the biz plus it comes with the plastic case to keep it all nice and dry.

I’m going to order some frog tape, but this stuff sounds very promising. Almost like it was designed for us.

That is good tape .
I remember when I was an apprentice and I left normal masking tape (no blue or green tape existed back then in South West Oz)on exterior shopfront powdercoat window frames …we didn’t go back to that job for two weeks or so and when I tried to remove tape it was a rude shock I can tell u .
That’s why dad said never leave it on anything.
I was there for hours with rags and metho, acetone ,turps etc .
I think I tried everything and nothing worked really well. Life lesson learned, im not game to leave tape on anything no matter what color.

Just wanted to update everyone on this tape after the first day using it. It’s amazing. It has the non tackiness of masking tape with the durability of duct tape. I’ll be ordering several rolls and using this from now on. At $8 you can’t beat it for the quality.
