Barn swallows

Anyone deal with washing away these swallow mud nests?

Far as I know, they’re a protected species in the US and they reuse their nests, so it’s illegal to take them down

Be careful, swallows are protected birds and you can’t remove the nests if they are in them or if it’s between certain months, May to Sept I believe. We don’t remove any type of nests. Makes life easier all the way around.

Yeah I usually just say no but I made an exception for a couple of reasons. It is illegal to remove them if they’re active but the birds migrate around this time every year until spring.

I think it’s actually March to September. It’s protected but not endangered, so I guess one can technically remove nests once breeding season has ended and the nests have been abandoned, but not removing any type of nests is our policy, too. Certainly does make things easier as I’m not a bird expert.

I found this, environmental lawyer’s article.

Same rules apply here mostly, but they migrate in the fall. I’ve been reading up on it and I’m going to make a phone call before I proceed just in case.
