Anyone turbo cinderblock for paint removal/paint prep

Homeowner wants it cleaned up and wants to paint themselves. They will take care of the paint chips. Doesn’t have to be bare, but the 6 layers of paint that are flaking need reduced.

I’m wondering if it is as fast as turboing retaining walls, for pricing. I fly down retraining walls, wish I could fill my schedule with them. I’m sure I’ll eventually run into one that causes problems but so far so easy.

Yes. Don’t shoot for perfection and you can fly through it with a decent sized machine. Wear safety glasses.

Did this on a small patio, man those paint chips will fly everywhere.

exactly why I talked to the homeowner about it. Said I will clean up all the chips, but I’ll be charging more. They liked the idea of saving some money. I told them a backpack blower and blow it out to the yard and grind it up with the mower. They have a few acres, not some small plot. Apparently they are gonna let the “chips fall where they may” and cover with landscape rock. i laughed, but she was serious.

In my opinion things like this shouldn’t be washed but sandblasted.

Hmm…why?

A turbo nozzle is ideal for flaking paint. The first 5 layers are easy, the challenge is the first coat if it’s a quality paint.

From my experience the cleanup afterwards takes longer than the actual job, keep that in mind next time you offer. And as Texan said safety glasses are a must, these paint chips are like razor blades.

I feel the result would be much cleaner IMO.

How would you go about cleanup?

regular sandblasting is messy stuff, it goes everywhere plus a full respirator and suit. There is vapor blasting/dustless blasting, but those things are pricey and require a substantial compressor. I think the ready to go rigs are about 30k. Of course there is the PW wet blasting too, but not very efficient for large areas.

Yeah, I have a face shield for turboing, and now I wear a hat too. Last retaining wall I had cinders all through my luscious locks. The ladies were disappointed that my flowing mane wasn’t on display while working. I often have to shut down my equipment just to get the ladies to leave so I can get back to work. Trials and tribulations. I guess we all suffer in different ways.

I always joke with my wife that some house wife is going to take me away one day, she replies that if they are that dumb they can have you. Hurt feelings, sad face, slow shuffle back into computer room/office.

It’s hard work being gorgeous. A blessing and a curse. I feel your pain.

I guess the dustless blasting is what I mean then using an air compressor to blow out everything

I’d say both are good option depending on exactly what the customer wants but they also said they are covering all the paint chips up with landscape rock anyways so most of the blasting material would just get covered up. If they just want it decent turboing is much easier, cheaper, and faster but if they wanted it done perfect im sure blasting is much better at getting all the material of the wall yeah?
