Anyone ever shorten a trailer?

Not sure if this is a dumb question or not… hah.

About to upgrade my pressure washer to 5.5 GPM and start carrying a 275 gallon tote. I have a double axle trailer that is 16 ft. long, but i feel like 12 ft would be plenty, and would make it easier to get in and out places. So would cutting the back 4 feet off even be a possibility?

I could try to trade it for a smaller one or something, i suppose, but i figure cutting it would be faster and less of a hassle.

I did some brief searches, and saw where people said that doing so might affect the tongue weight if it threw the balance off… but since i probably wouldnt be using the back four feet anyway, it seems to me that that wouldn’t be an issue. But im not sure about that.

So… dumb idea? Keep it and leave it 16 feet? Trade for a smaller one?

Here’s a pic of it. Oh, and it will end up only having 1 tote on it… i had two on it in the picture because i was going to examine both and take the one in the best condition.

Cut of 4 feet from the back and move the axles up two feet. If that is beyond your skill set it would probably be cheaper to sell and get a different one.

Almost everyone wants bigger. Trade for the size you want and go fishing with the time and headache you save

Yeah, might end up doing that. If it was just cutting it off maybe not, but if the axles need moved that might be a bit time consuming.

I know a retired guy that does welding projects mostly for fun, who would be doing it… I would still pay him something, though. What if you just moved the back axle in front of the front one, and then re-positioned the fenders? Would that work, or would both need to be scooted up? Dont even know if that’s possible depending on how the springs and stuff are connected, just curious.

Thanks.

Go on craigslist under the barter section or even facebook marketplace and say your willing to trade this trailer for a shorter one. Someone will jump at that deal for sure.

Yeah, the more i think about it, that is probably the way to go.

Plus i think we only paid $450 for this one, and i think that’s a pretty good deal. Also we coated the entire thing with bedliner type paint, and built some drop in racks that aren’t pictured, that you can hang landscaping tools on.

Might be able to trade it for a nice condition 12 ft trailer, and maybe make a little on it.

Moving one up might work. I put sliding axles on my personal trailer so I can adjust if I’m pulling the tractor or something lighter. One size fits all doesn’t. Have to experiment

Sliding axles? What kinda sorcery is that?! That actually sounds perfect for a trailer I wanna get for my dad who doesn’t haul anything in between a small lawn tractor or enough brick to build half the Great Wall of China.

Same concept as floating axles on a tractor trailer. One inch pins with clevis to lock it in. Hook up to truck, pull pins and ease forward or backward, lock in pins and done.

It’s funny my dad retired from UPS with 37 (or 38, can’t remember) years driving tractor trailers without an accident. They gave him an oak plague with his face engraved on it which looks like reading rainbow’s lavar burton and not at all my dad. That’s beside the point.

The point is when it comes to hauling personal stuff it’s the Wild West with the ol’ man. Lol

I’m gonna look it up.

Trailer is 110 miles away at my hunting place but I’ll get pics this weekend. Opening day of Dove Season so I’ll be down there.

I knew I had a connection with you Brody! I am a 28 year veteran of old Uncle Parcel. I’m looking to retire in a few years and I figured I’d have a go at power washing. Your dad probably knows about floating axles, but we don’t use them at UPS.(Loads aren’t heavy enough to justify them)

Damn mailman, must have stolen my invitation.

Come on. Find Currie, NC then just holler. I’ll hear you

Sheesh, that’s in the middle of nowhere. Thought you were closer to Raleigh. How’s the duck hunting down there? You got some ponds on the farm?

I live in Fuquay Varina. Currie is where my hunting trailer and land are. You can duck hunt on the Black river there but I never got into that. I cleared 5 acres in my woods, plant corn and sunflowers every year and sit on a bucket and shoot birds

I have one little pond that’s as big as the bucket of the backhoe would reach lol

I wish i had a penny for every time someone has had to spell that to someone else.

First two letters give them pause
