I’m just curious if anyone has any experience with these Kohler engines. I have a dealer here selling a bunch of these as replacements to landscape companies. He’s stacking them deep and selling them cheap as they say.
If they are efi, buy them all. If they are carbureted, just make sure you can get ethanol free gas around your area. Good Good machines if the fuel is right. I had 6 Kohler Commanders at one point
I have the model in your pic, carbureted Command Pro 14.
Works just fine.
Forgot to say the muffler rattled itself off. Replaced it last week and the newer model muffler includes and additional metal support. Hopefully lasts longer
@Steve did you end up getting one of these? Or do you at least have some long term feedback from the dealer wrt durability/maintenance/parts?
I know this is an old thread, but it seems everyone is choosing the gx390 for 5.5gpm builds, over the 14hp Kohler.
It seems pricing is comparable between the two, and the extra hp(or two) from the Kohler should be a good bonus for flatwork.
I am also going to tag
@TexasPressureWashing - you recently said a friend used a 14hp Kohler with a 5.5gpm pump.
Was it just due to pricing - any considerations with durability/maintenance of the Kohler vs gx390?
@MDA1775 - in Dec '18 you said you have a 5.5gpm machine with 14hp Kohler - any long term feedback on it that you don’t mind sharing?
I am going to be doing this only part time for a while, and doing my own maintenance and repairs(YouTube), so my concern is really about durability and parts availability/cost of the 14hp Kohler vs gx390.
Edit: durability- meant to say durability/reliability.
Pricing really. He got it for $575 and was looking to get a Predator 420CC for $329. He went with Kohler for brand name.
In the landscape side of things we did stack them deep and sell them cheap. They ran great for what we were using them for. And we had great accessibility to repair parts if necessary. Of course, I’d suggest checking with your local engine shops to ensure they can get you parts and service if needed.
I have 19 and 23 hp EFI Kohler’s running 5.5 and 8 gpm pumps. I’ve had to replace the fuel pump on the 19 twice but Kohler has updated the pump. They have good tech support, the last pump they replaced for free, both my machines are 5 yrs old. How that helps.
No, I bought a GX690 with an 8 GPM pump and still have 2 GX390 with 4.5 GPM pumps. I’m probably going to upgrade one of the 4.5s this year with a Kohler and a 5.5 though.
If you do upgrade one of the 4.5 to a 5.5 with a Kohler, would you use the small 14hp Kohler, or go with one of the bigger/EFI ones?
Edit: @Steve
I will just be going with the 14 horsepower and a 5.5 pump. I don’t really care that much about the PSI as I’m going to use it for house washing only.
I already have a 8GPM for flat work and commercial buildings etc. I’m just needing something between the 4.5 and the 8 because the 4.5 is a little too slow for house washing and the 8 consumes water at a faster rate than most of my job sites can provide, so I wind up constantly watching my tank level.
