The Recession Thread

another thing that requires meaningful discussion to define…what is it, how much is it (and in what locale), and who deserves to make whatever it is? Obviously, if I’m working a basic “menial” job typically held by 16 year olds, I’m not going to earn enough to buy a house (and certainly not the one everyone feels like they deserve)

I’ll jump in briefly on this thread drift…

Many bachelor’s degrees don’t amount to much. Only the last year do you actually learn anything in that field of study, so when it’s time to get a job you get passed over due to lack of experience. Meanwhile you’re on the hook for insanely inflated education costs and it’s no wonder there is a big push to cancel student debt.

I never went to college, but many of my friends did and frankly they got jobs just because they have that ‘paper’ in a frame even though it has nothing to do with what they studied. If I had gone to college it would have been a tech school or some STEM field.

Whew, glad we got that figured out. What’s next … immigration, healthcare? I know! How about abortion, or the existence of God?

I was a teenager before I knew that another word for juvember was a sling shot. Two phrases I heard growing up in reply to a question with an obvious “yes”…
Does a cat have a juvember
Does a fat puppy poot

Yep, the dictionary is filled with all those meaningless words. I read books and they crammed full of vulgarity. I just finished reading One Second After by John Mattherson and he typed a lot. Forward by Newt Gingrich could have been skipped though IMHO.

I never said that I was opposed to paying debts. I have no debts, other than one motorcycle at .99 percent financing. I would be an idiot to pay that loan off early. My kids school is paid for through the semester. I own all my equipment for my business, no debt there either.

I did say that I could make an argument one way or another on the subject. I was also pointing out the duplicity of our society, it’s ok for GM to receive millions, banks bailed out for millions, Harvard receives millions, give billions to foreign countries, the previous president walking away or stiffing people out of millions, but jim and stacy went to college and by god they have to pay. Makes no logical sense to me.

Infer what you will, it is still somewhat of a free society. Dershowitz said that in order to get your first amendment card, you should go to something you utterly despise and support them while they say it. I attempt to adhere to that philosophy, but I find myself lacking the mental fortitude at times.

You could call me any name in the book you want, I will still listen to your advice on equipment. Some of the other stuff like chicken and cheer wine, well, not so much. Peace be unto you and yours this holiday season (where I’m from we call it Christmas, but I don’t want to offend anyone too much).

I had steaks with William Forstchen at my brother’s house a few years ago. Got a few signed books. Hard for me to read with the daughter passing from T1 in the story line.

neither are a discussion IMHO, but agreed, there are other boards for those topics, and I avoid them (and watching the “news”) for obvious reasons, lol

Moral of all the topics in this discussion…“don’t live by putting yourself ahead of others, or at the center of everything”…a simple concept it took me far too long to grasp in life :joy:

Lol I remember being that dummy yelling things out of my friends windows. Until some guy pulled a gun on us and turned out it was my high school athletic director’s oldest son. Good times

When i was younger, we used to be in two separate cars shooting fireworks at each other and just running around being terrors. When i have bad things happen to me by kids nowadays i don think the worlds going to hell in a handbasket, i think its just paying me back because i was such a menace.

I completely forgot that Mattherson’s story is based in your neck of the woods and that he taught in a college there. I would have liked to hear his take on hardening home infrastructure. It is just interesting to me, not like I am going to build a faraday cage in a bunker or anything.

He honestly didn’t know that much when he started the series. That’s one of the reasons he was interviewing brother. Super nice guy.

That’s crazy! I just finished thale first book a few weeks ago. I am unsure yet on whether I want to read the 2nd/3rd, as they seem to more or less just standard post apocalyptic stories whereas the first was a realistic look at the cause of the apocolypse itself.

I’d love to help you expedite your “early retirement” :joy:

We’ve been almost 100% residential, mostly because that is what I had experience with when I started working for Window Gang in college. Idk why, but commercial has always seemed inaccessible. Would love to buy you a couple Cheerwines and lunch and chat and maybe get some advice/suggestions sometime if you’re free sometime this winter.
