Simpson 420cc 4gpm - thermal relief valve - how to set up bypass to buffer?

Thanks @MuscleMyHustle, I appreciate that insight into those machines. My post was attempting to address the idea that the weight of water alone is enough to turn an IBC into a house spigot. I’m always seeing posts of people with 50 gallon drums, thinking their 400 pounds of water is going to mimic hose pressure. And I think it’s fascinating that the container shape and size has absolutely nothing to do with psi.

I see what you’re correcting, he just needs flow and to keep his pump primed. My information was correct but not helpful in the scenario lol.

Edit: I changed some of the wording because it made me sound like I was being sarcastic lol

I’ve got a line going back to my buffer tank on a direct drive pump

Not my bypass - wrong configuration. Also with all that hanging off machine, may be upgrading quicker than anticipated

I just told @qons the other day if I sold my extra fittings and parts I could probably retire.

A bypass has nothing to do with whether it’s a direct drive, gear, or belt drive. It has to do with the unloader.

Since you won’t be able to have a bypass I would just hook directly into your machine from the house’s water supply. There’s really no reason for a buffer with a 4 gpm pump if you’re not able to have a bypass.

anyone think getting a new pump that has a bypass on the 420cc engine would be worth it? maybe i could sell this pump on ebay or somewhere?

I’m running a 5.5gpm 3500psi gear drive on a 420cc motor now. Works good.

Definitely worth it. I wouldn’t have the patience to have to mess with remembering to squeeze the gun every minute. Plus, if the customer comes out to talk, your phone rings, have to run back to truck, etc you don’t have to always be worrying about your pump overheating.

You won’t get much for that pump on ebay. I would save it as a spare that way you could at least have something to use for the 3 days or so it takes to get a new one in the mail.

It’s the unloader that will have a bypass. The new pump you order won’t have an unloader. You’ll have to purchase an unloader, unloader block, and whip separately.

Ah I was replying to someone who I thought said they were unable to plump that. I misread

I’m trying to make this 420cc simpson pressure washer work. The engine itself is good, and produces enough power for what I need… Its the pump with the built in unloader that is a p.o.s…

I want to take off the stock pump, and replace it with a 5.5 gpm general pump or udor pump… Would I be able to achieve 3000-3500 PSI with a 420cc engine, and either pump?

I want to take it from a direct drive to a gear drive… be able to use a buffer tank, and use a bypass back to the tank so I can stay off trigger while gaining GPM?

Udor gearbox 5038.c2 for 1450 rpm udor m, mk, g, and gk series plunger pumps…

Anyone have specific pump #'s, and gear drive #'s for a 420cc engine??? Is this a dumb idea?

I have a gx390 (389cc) pushing a 5.6 gpm pump @3000 psi @ ’ 100 of pw hose.
So theoretically yes a 420 cc should do it. Just remember for every 100’ of hose you add you lose 100 to 300 psi to the gun.
Call dultimeyer and ask them exactly what your trying to do and they’ll guide you along and get exactly what you need at the best possible price.

I found this and was thinking of doing the same with my simpson. I am the guy who has a second unloader on my simpson 420, against forum advice, and no catastrophes yet. I have run it this way for 2 years and it has allowed me to not be on the trigger all the time but it is not advised to do this, but I was cheap when I started out and just haven’t switched it yet. But again, it is not advised to run a second unloader that cost $85, just saying.

Take that unloader off and mount it to a unloader block so the unloader isn’t hanging off the pump , which could snap off, if you go this route …

This is a true statement. You only have to break one male qc in the pump to ruin a day. Like I shared, this is not advised, just save and spend on a better pump. This is now just a backup machine. Until then, learn to get quick with a ball valve and pop the gun or lance off when you need to take your hand off. This will help you decide faster to upgrade as it is a major pita.

What is the second unloader you bought to add onto the Simpson unit to be able to have that bypass valve?

Sounds like the route I’ll take until I can either upgrade to gear drive, but most likely just upgrade to belt drive/new unit & sell this to someone on Craigslist lol.

if I had to do it again I would just buy a better pump and keep the original as a backup.

This pump is fully plumbed and is plug and play. The unloader alone is 110$ with fittings. Get the better pump and wash on.

see the issue is I can upgrade to that pump, but its still a direct drive, and not a gear drive - wouldnt pull from a buffer tank thats why i was looking at gear drive units

Check Envirospec for pumps. They have decent pumps at decent prices. If you want an Udor Sprayer Depot has the best price. I think a 5 gpm/3k psi Udor with gear box is like $650 with free shipping.
