If the check valves are bad it will pulse. You will also have a loss of pressure. I had a piece of a check valve get lodged in my ds injector one time. It was not a built in one like you said. But it is possible that is the problem. Check valves are easy to replace. But if that is a AAA pump good luck finding the parts. That leaves you with replacing/upgrading the pump.
