Dept of Defense SkillBridge Program

It depends on the branch and the base but all bases have detachments of active duty guys that handle a lot of things. Most barracks stuff is handled by active duty as well. Usually sailors not fit for full duty or on hold for medical/legal reasons.

How about workers’ comp…Is that covered by DOD, or would the contractor have to pay it? (I guess that may vary by state, but maybe the DOD trumps state requirements???)

It’s always by state. Texas requires no workers comp.

So my first DOD intern has started. He’s a young marine and a good kid (21). He applied for the program and told me up front he wanted to come learn so he could start his own business.

He’s been a very quick study, asking a lot of good questions, and talking with other companies as we work with them. He also is a hard worker and always asks for tasking if he finishes something.

We are starting his build soon so he can get started on washing driveways on the weekends and build up from there as he gains experience.

I would have given anything to had this program when I was getting out of the Marines. When I was getting out we were rushed through Taps and Seps with no job plan and no understanding how the VA network worked. Everything worked out though I’m still slowly finding my own way, but am glad to see that there is a path for guys and gals starting to get out. I am new here with zero experience, but I’ve been reading and watching youtube videos before trying or building anything myself.
