Cedar House Restoration

The Cutek went very deep into the wood. I don’t think it’s ever coming out. Would be easier to replace the boards than try to get it out.

Thanks for the advice.

Here is one for you guys…
Owner says he stains the house about every year or every other year. He has had some mold specialist out and told him that the black stain is not mold. I have not done a test spot because I have not been at work yet. Not sure if I will based on what I seen. I told him he is definitely going to heavy on his coates. I can tell in the areas where it is peeling.

Owner said he would like to have it all removed so he can start fresh with an oil based stain which is what I recommend. What do you guys think?

Lol good luck. That’s a nightmare of a job and the homeowner better have deep pockets because completely stripping that and staining it is going to be tens of thousands of dollars. It can be done but it’s not easy and requires a crew of guys that know what they’re doing.

I second this opinion. There would have to be a very, very large amount of cash waiting for me to do that job

I could not agree more. I don’t think it’s mold anyways. I think it’s how the stain reacted with the heat and the fact that it was put on too heavy.

Way too heavy.

I am looking at one like this now. They put a coat on every year for about 10 years so of course it is built up and of course it is flaking in areas. They, and probably your home owner too, didn’t do any sanding in-between coats.

If they were willing to pay I would take the gig. 2 choices, chemically strip and then sand, or rent the sandblaster. None of the crews near me are using corncob for the most part anymore. I just went to a log cabin training last month, they all said they are booked out for the year. I’ve already turned one down, too much damage by carpenter bees.

Nice work, looks good.

No problem with bleed through using paper?

I’ve only used paper a few times. I was mainly concerned about the little “spits” that you get sometimes with oil when you come off the edge of the wood.

I’ve seen a lot of guys using paper in certain situations. And it’s a lot cheaper and quicker to roll out. So I wanted to see how it worked. It worked well.

Here’s a deck I stained three years ago.

I took this pic this week. I’d say it’s held up really well.

The customer wants to keep it looking really sharp so we’re getting ready to re-stain it.
