When you don't trust your equipment anymore

This is what i just dished out for heater repair. Most of it was labor to remove the coil and clean it and replace the insulation.

The Ignitor came detached during a job last week and there is no fail safe to stop the injector from delivering fuel.

So the injector just kept right on delivering diesel into the chamber. I finally looked and saw smoke pluming out everywhere.

What a piece of junk. I have 11 stops waiting for their pads to be done this week and i don’t want to fire this thing up.

Working by myself.

Why not learn to do the repairs yourself? I was pretty intimidated by that idea before, but YouTube and manufacturer service department phone calls cured me. (Of course, I don’t use hot water and I’ve never messed with a burner, but it can’t be all that complicated)

Just my $0.02…I know a lot of folks are way too busy to do their own repairs and, if that includes you, getting them done by someone else can be more profitable than doing them yourself.

What brand hotbox ?

I feel your frustration.

Funny, i did a video awhile back “DIY VS Paying Someone” but never was released.
Paying someone won by a landslide.

Even my local dealer had issues trying to remove the coil. Instead of popping off top, 3 clips, boom, lift it out, mine has 4 threaded rods bolted in the bottom.

Wayne burner instead of Beckett. They’ve only sold one of my Ignitor assemblies. Ever.

It’s my fault for not doing enough research when i bought it. But then again, i did do many hours of research on different forums. You reach information burnout at a certain point.

Da duh da DAAAA - Bulldog :unamused:

This is exactly the type of thing i was referring to in my mission statement post. Saving people this type of thing by getting them set up correctly from the start.

@Trav1111
Do you have any pics of your setup?

I’m at the point where i just want to throw down $3100 for a brand new heater.

Interested in what you’re using.

@Jordie These are all I have. I have since added more to my trailer to hang wands and my surface cleaner and whatnot. But I’m actually just running a prebuilt Landa PGHW 5/5000. Tested it’s actually about 5.3/4700. I bought it before I found this forum and knew that you could build something for a lot cheaper.

What no chem tank?

No, I have a ds injector but haven’t set it up yet. I have been xjetting, it’s getting old though. Haha. I’ve been working out of 5gal buckets and 15gal drums.

Man it will change your life . Dragging around a 5 gallon bucket all day sounds way to much like work

I hate hotboxes sometimes. Had an emergency callout last Friday nite, sign truck had ruptured a hydraulic line on one of the local Lowe’s while changing out bulbs. Hydraulic fluid all over front of building and of course sign right over front entry, so hydraulic fluid everywhere by time I get there 5 hours later. Darn hotbox which had worked perfectly 2 days before wouldn’t start. Messed with it an hour and had to call a friend to bring his. Mine never would start.
Finally get time today to carry it by shop to see what’s wrong with it and of course it fires up and runs perfectly. We tried it over 10 times and worked perfectly every time. grrrrrr

Well to top of the day, fire extinguisher went off in my van when i opened side door. Finished cleaning that up an hour ago. Nothing like a full day’s work.

I bet your flow switch was hung up I have had it happen dozens of times & mostly at night

How the heck do you unhang it? Got me watching videos now, lol

Very interesting. Did your cost/benefit analysis take into account that doing repairs yourself might reduce downtime in many situations?

Tapping the valve body will free it up in early stages of wear, corrosion, but carry a spare. It could be other things, vibration loosens screws, nuts, jordies ignitor failure from vibration, it pays to lift transformer cover at intervals to check for loose ignitor screws etc, look for detached insulation of end cap I don’t get more than a year on thermostats, if a pressure pro wiring can be shoddy, 12v Delco’s have issues as well you will figure it out & be wiser because of it.

How long between fuel filter changes ? That is probably the #1 cause of burner not firing

Fuel filter is good. I had just changed to a bigger tank and still think it may have had something to do with that. It was like it had a vapor lock almost. But it’s working now.
