Truck Tires?

I’m needing a new set of tires on the ole F-150. Currently it has Bridgestone Duelers A/T now but I’m thinking about going with a more basic tires since I only use the truck for work. Any suggestions on a good tire that won’t break the bank?

What size ? And are you going with 10ply ?

I use Michelin LTX…very reasonably priced and a great tire. I have no need for 10 ply tires.

My 2018 F150 came with Michelin LTX and although I just finally hit 17k on the odometer I’m very happy with them. Plenty of grip for testing the twin turbos on the 2.7L!

I’m open to anything but I’m debating the need for a thousand dollar set of tires vs. something in the 600 range.

I haven’t priced those but the Michelin’s we put on my wife’s car were pricey.

Michelin is definitely the best tire out there in my opinion but some of them are pricey depending on size. Cooper Discoverers are a good tire and at a pretty decent price. They have them in different treads. I think they have the highway, a/t and then mud. I think @DisplacedTexan is a fan too… I have the Cooper Discoverer at-3 right now. The tread didn’t last quite as long as some other tires but close. I need new tires soon too and wouldn’t flinch at buying Cooper again. They’re a good middle to middle upper priced tire. I think I paid $800 but that was for 285’s which really increases the price.

There’s plenty of tires that I have not tried. Of the ones I have, Cooper is hands down the best all around. Good looks, great traction, good wear (especially for an AT), very quiet and not outlandishly expensive. The set I bought for my last pickup ran me right at $900 with a 55k mile warranty and I can assure you they will easily reach that if properly maintained. I had a set go almost 70k before I got skittish and replaced them. My new (to me) truck has a set of General Grabber highway tires that the old man that had it before me had put on late last year. I think they have right around 12k miles on them right now and they still look new. If you’re running a half ton truck or smaller and rarely go off pavement then you really don’t need 10 ply tires because it’s unlikely that you’re maxing out the weight rating on those with a trailer that a half ton could safely pull. The Cooper’s I had were the Discoverer AT3 XLT so they were a 10 ply but I take my trucks down to the creek and occasionally wash stuff that is well off the beaten path such as equipment, construction sites, yada yada yada.

If your not going off road and not in the north, all seasons would likely be your best price option. ATs are pricier and if your not really using them it is wasted money. I have had coopers, Generals, and goodyears on my trucks, to me the 10 ply cooper was the best tire. But you probably won’t need 10 ply unless your hauling heavy loads on your trailer.

best prices on tires the last couple of times I shopped were sams club special deals and tire rack. If you use the online guys for sales make sure you got a local that will mount them. Not all of them will because they lose money by not selling the tire.

Our 4runner came with Falken (Sumitomo) Wildpeak tires and let me tell you, they have been long wearing and very smooth with good grip very similar to Michelins I’ve had. Never had to balance them in 3+ years.

That’s what I have been looking at, thanks for the info. My only dilemma - and this is really stupid - is that my ex daughter in law was named Cooper and I have to think if I want to see that name on my truck everyday. :expressionless:

Was looking at these too, thanks for the input.

In a way you’re kind of running her over or at least dragging her name through the dirt. That alone should be a good selling point. The heck with tread life…lol

If it helps any, when these Grabbers get down to their half-life stage I’ll be putting the same Coopers on right away. That is, if they even make them in a size that will fit these factory wheels.

Get the coopers. Ive been getting 70k on the stt pro and stt maxx. The pros howl but pull like crazy when doing silly stuff. The stt maxx pull really good as well but dont howl and won’t beat you up. NTB sometimes has a buy 3 get one free if those are in your area. Dont know much about the AT models but 70k on a mud tire is pretty great

Really depends what you look for in a tire, strength, road noise, traction or tread wear. You’ll never get all 4 in a single compound, hence the wide selection of tires from the same manufacturer in the same size. For my personal cars I’m a huge fan of the Michelin pilot sports series, great tire but pricing has become a huge turn off. For the work trucks I throw on whatever is on sale, chooching along on city pavement at the speed limit from one house to another I can’t say it needs any cutting edge performance characteristics, good enough for me lol.

Ironman all country at or Ironman radial ap they are on the cheaper side and wear really good. I get 30- 35 thousand miles out of a set easy.

I would be extremely disappointed if I only got 35k miles out of a set of tires. Regardless of price.
