Being away from the family is probably the worst part about the trades. I had back issues when I started boilermaking and the work didn’t do any favors. Nothing like low crawling around the back pass covered in fly ash to weld tubes. Earlier this year was the first outage I missed at a certain power plan in a spring for probably 10 years. I enjoy the work but my body sure doesn’t. There’s nothing like running your own business. I wish I would’ve started washing years ago. I’m sure you don’t miss those 2 foot wrenches and pounding on knocker wrenches. You guys are always a greasy mess too. It’s almost like Millwrights intentionally rub it all over their face. 😄

Correct me if I am wrong, but isnt this a job for a professional painter?

I won’t paint a house but I’ll stain a house. It’s two different beasts to me.

Your talk about flyash and tubes just about made me vomit haha! Just brutal work in power plants. If your not greasy, your covered in coal or flyash or sweat or water…pick your poison. That is the only regret I have, is not starting earlier. Live and learn i guess. Trust me when I say, there is alot I dont miss about beign a Millwright.

Yes your probably correct, however I like to push the envelope and learn new things. How do I do this? By adjusting to learning curves as I go. Reading material thats relevant to the job, talking to like minded people, it all helps. Like my friend John Michael Montgomery once said " Life’s A Dance, you learn as you go. "

Stained this today.

It’s the husband’s cigar room. He had some fancy name for it. Can’t remember it now.

It was something like humidor but started with an “s”. I had never heard the word before.

Smokeasies?

Means: A term originally coined by the author to generically describe any room or facility that caters strictly to cigar smokers, permitting them to light up and relax without incurring the wrathful glares of less sophisticated individuals. It is a modern-day version of the speakeasies of Prohibition infamy.

I thought it ended in a “r”.

Notice in the pic that there’s a deck. They didn’t want the deck stained though it needed it just as bad.

Sometimes I’m left scratching my head at what people decide to get done to their property and decide to forego.

</div>

Huh. No clue. I don’t smoke cigars so I couldn’t even guess and I got nothing from google lol

I’m the same way about homeowners and the decisions they make. Sometimes you can chalk it up to money being a factor but sometimes there’s absolutely no question that they can afford the service but they still decide not to do it and go ahead with other services. I guess everyone prioritizes things differently.

I did a house wash on the customer’s house so I grabbed a pic of what the “Stumidor” looks like a year later.

They call it a Stumidor because his name is Stu.
So it’s a combo of Stu + humidor. I didn’t pick up on that earlier.

I’ll be doing both their decks in the spring.
