SH eats copper?

How did that happen luna? I know why it happened to Crystal doesn’t look like he rinsed at all lol. Did you also not rinse or did it damage it that quick?

@Grizz…My door was bad and I sprayed it down with some hot mix then sprayed down the front of the house and went back and rinsed it and it was already starting to look cloudy…it got a bit worse but at least it was mine… anyone else’s and I would have taped it up and not sprayed around the locks…just a total jacka $$ moment…

Count me as one of the doorknob killers. I did a normal housewash on a patio home, some must have hit their storm door handle plate and…let’s just say I had to use Goof Off to get the residue off the painted part below. I guess it was clearcoated or something.

I offered to replace it, but as we did a ton more than asked she said don’t worry about it. I told her if she changes her mind the offer still stands.

Guess I’ll have to protect those from now on. Yikes.

Looked something like this, but had the cut up fancy design glass and bronze hardware finish.

I usaully just tape the lock holes and not worry about anything else. I wouod have did this to a customer…
Thats what i like about this site. A simple post can save you hundreds if not thousands of dollars.

It was really weird. You could see the splash marks, it’s as if the coating just melted off and ran down the white paint under the handle plate. My usual spray can cleaner wouldn’t touch it.

Wow…

Guys and gals.

Lets not make it so over complicated.

Vaseline, tape, ect…Yes these will prevent.

But, how about just not soaping the damn door handles??

Nothing against anyone and I respect the attention to detail.

But I would never smear vaseline, or tape door handles to prevent soap damage.

Its very easy to prevent this from happening without over thinking.

Sorry for the rant, but I can’t help commenting on the crazy ideas and solutions…

KMP I’m curious to know what method you use to clean doors

Easier said than done in my case. Most of my customers want their front door overhang done underneath as they have a fair amount of mildew, dirt and cobwebs. It’s almost impossible to keep SH from splashing on various hardware. I just need to start taping and such.

Here’s a typical patio home entrance we’ve been doing.

We wash homes all day long with those door handles.

95% don’t need soap because they dont have algae or mold on them.

If they do, we rinse with water first, soap, then rinse directly after.

Another thing thats an issue is the strength of soap you are using.

Alot of guys want to use a very strong mix which will 100% cause these issues.

Tone down the mix, take your time, and you wont have the issues.

Oh ok so your not against soaping the door.

What are you worried about in that entrance way??

I see a glass door covering up the main door.

You can spray HW mix all over in there with no issues.

That’s you, not here. Most if not all have mildew everywhere and the customers want it off.

I’ll try rinsing with water first next time.

We still wash doors with mildew with no issues.

What strength mix are you using?

Downstream?

Xjet?

Downstream General 2.1 injector, somewhere around 11:1 ratio and 12.5 SH/snotmenade, 200’ pressure hose.

If I weaken my mix the gutters won’t come clean. The past two years have been extremely wet and mildew is everywhere.

It’s not the issue of the mix.its the issue of is it worth the the cost of replacing the lock. Compared to the cost of protecting the lock.

Did some reading, looks like Tarn-X could have cleaned it up.

It’s done the trick for me on silver handles, but I’m not sure what it could do for the rubbed bronze. The SH and/or surfactant will actually strip the “live finish” from the metal. You might be able to bring the finish back by buffing in some vegetable oil or some other type of oil into the metal, but I’m not sure if that would be a permanent solution.

I totally get where you’re coming from on soap getting on door hardware. The only thing that makes me comfortable washing a house with rubbed bronze fixtures is to tape them up. Might add a minute or two per door. I like the vaseline idea, but slimy stuff grosses me out.

Ah, good to know. It must be the bleach though, as window cleaners we both know Dawn, etc doesn’t affect them.

That finish did just melt right off, really unnerving.
