Many question from a newbie

Ok. Here are several questions that I have:

  1. We are about to start roof/house washing. Do you use the same mixture for both?
  2. What do you prefer for the soap? Why?
  3. Where do I find these?
  4. What mixture for each? We are using 12.5%SH.
  5. Rinse or leave? Why?
  6. How long is the SH good?
  7. Where do I store the SH?
  8. What is the approriate temp to store it?
  9. Do you have a formula for charging?
  10. How do you educate the customer on proper care after you leave? Brochure? Video?

I am sure I will have more but this is what I have right this second. lol.
Thank you in advance for your help!!

Charity,

Feel free to give me a call sometime, I’d be happy to give you some tips.

Clark and Micah, I asked Charity to post these questions here so others can learn, too. I’ll give a shot at answering them but please jump in. Anyone else with input please give it.

I hope this gets you started, at least.

  1. We are about to start roof/house washing. Do you use the same mixture for both?

For roofs I typically use 2 parts water to 1 part 12%. To wash a house I would downstream this mixture or even up it to 1:1. To use your Fatboy to wash a house I will let someone who does this answer.

For house washing you want less than 1% sh on vinyl. Somewhere in the area of .06-1%.so if you are using a Fatboy or similar type pump you need to dilute the sh accordingly. My preferred method for house washing is downstreaning.

  1. What do you prefer for the soap? Why?

I’m sold on Fresh Wash. It allows me to use less bleach and it also kills the bleach scent. If I need extra cling I give it a shot of Roof Snot.

3. Where do I find these?

Fresh Wash is from [replacer_a]. PWRA members get 5% off. Roof Snot comes from Southside Equipment.

4. What mixture for each? We are using 12.5%SH.

One ounce per gallon of concentrate mix for down streaming house wash. Five gallons of house wash gets five ounces of FW. I don’t remember the roof amount off the top of my head.

For roof mix .75 oz per gal of mix. For steeper roofs add more

  1. Rinse or leave? Why?

The only thing I don’t rinse is roofs because I want the mix to stay up there until the sun breaks it down. Everything else must be thoroughly rinsed.

6. How long is the SH good?

Depends on how fresh it is, how hot it is outside, and if any sun gets on it. Typically good for at least a couple of weeks.

My understanding is the sh breaks down rapidly from 12% to 10 % then it takes along time to breakdown further. I have no idea how strong my sh actually is. If your mix isn’t working add some more sh to it.

7. Where do I store the SH?

Preferably someplace cool. Definitely where sun isn’t shining on it.

  1. What is the approriate temp to store it?

Put it in a shed if you have one. Don’t store it in your house because of fumes.

  1. Do you have a formula for charging?

    Of course.

Yes only you can figure out what your cost of doing business is. And what your market will bear.

10. How do you educate the customer on proper care after you leave? Brochure? Video?

Proper care of what?

I am sure I will have more but this is what I have right this second. lol.

Hope this helps. I still think its important to use the search function. You will get a wider variety of information.

Oh, sorry about that. I didn’t have the time to type a lot today - but I will try to check back and add to the conversation soon.

Thanks, Micah.

Clark, we don’t have a lot of info to search- yet. That’s why it is good to answer questions like this now and build up searchable archives. Thanks for pitching in! Together we are going to build the biggest, best archive of NO BS info on the internet.
