Machine Tuning Checklist

I purchased a lightly used cold water, belt driven machine as my first workhorse. It pushes 4 GPM at 4000 psi.

Pump and motor oil look good, it starts on the first pull, and I’ve tested it at 4.2 GPM with low pressure tips.

Is there anything you guys would recommend I do to ensure the machine is properly setup before getting to work?

Some things I’ve considered doing:

  1. Check max pump pressure (not that I’ll need it)
  2. Ensure bypass is set wide open (ties into #1)
  3. Ensure thermal valve is working properly (I don’t yet have an external bypass with buffer tank)

The thermal valve opens after about 20 seconds of idle operation. I believe it is spec’d to open at 145 F. Is the pump heating too quickly, or is this normal without an external bypass?

Anything to add?

Thanks!
