I am getting kind of tired of loading/unloading my f150 all the time and would love a dedicated box truck in the 10-12ft range to be able to work out of. Have been searching around trying to find something not overpriced and clapped out but not having much luck. Since I’ll have to fly pretty much anywhere to get something like that if y’all see something locally in your area that seems to fit the bill would you mind forwarding it my way?
Trucks are stupid expensive right now, thought about an enclosed trailer?
I’ve thought about a lot of things!
I don’t necessarily need to buy immediately as I have that 6x10 enclosed trailer I bought this year that I am using for storage but it doesn’t fit my purposes for residential work. There’s a large amount of roads here that having a trailer is just not feasible for parking.
Before you ask…yes I know how to back a trailer it’s just so much more convenient to have my truck in and out of areas. Especially the older part of town where it’s all zero lot lines and no parking.
I figure the best upgrade is a box truck that’s still small enough to fit places my truck can with the added benefit of being able to secure and keep my stuff out of the rain and not have to move it around all the time. That is definitely getting old. Also it gives me room to be able to add a buffer tank which will allow me to upgrade to a big boy PW and I can keep my current one as a backup.
Just put a hitch on your Prius.
Check used UHaul truck lots. Also, perhaps consider a van option, like an older Econoline, Transit, Sprinter, etc.
Used Uhauls even hard to find. But worth a look up there. Probably more people moving to AK than moving out.
I’ll bet a shuttle bus could be converted into a killer wash rig. Folding doors on the passenger side & doors on the rear. Fleet maintained & not uncommon on the local classifieds. A lot of folks turn them into RV’s.
I wonder if those bad boys can hold a 275 tote of SH and a buffer tank without breaking the frame. I’ll have to look into that. Thanks. I would think a U-Haul would be nice because the ad space. When I head down south to pick up my hypothetical rig I’m going to sell my first born and have it fully wrapped and work on a color matching uniform shirt. If that doesn’t generate me revenue I don’t know what will
I don’t know what the specs on the bus are, but it is probably a 350. 275 gal tote at 8 lbs a gallon is 2,200 lbs, not including the weight of the tote or frame. I think it is a neat idea and doable if the right frame with no rust is found at the right price. OF course it would be cheaper if you had the welding skills to finish it off.
Everything is way up, trucks, trailers, iron &steel, the only metals that aren’t up are gold and silver that I know of. I really wish precious metals would go up so I can dump what I have.
Those buses come in many different shapes & sizes. Check out your local classifieds & search for ‘shuttle bus’ & see where that rabbit hole leads. There is a limit around here as to how many passengers will fit before you need a CDL, so you would definitely want to check into that first. I imagine a 15 passenger bus can pull quite a load. Just about all of them come with a wheelchair lift as well. It would be pretty cool to mount a hose reel stack kit on there & push a button to watch it pop out the side. That would dazzle the customers!
Or use that like a “tommy gate” to lift the barrels of SH into the vehicle!
If only I could get barrels…3 pack of Costco bleach only so far. That’s a lot of bottles for a 55 gallon tank for batch mix. I’m just about sick of it to be honest.
That’s a great idea! Just downstream it straight out of the pontoon float & call it a day.
I typed in ‘box truck’ on my local Facebook Marketplace and it came up with several options.
BTW when did these Ford Transits get so darn expensive??? I saw one, 50k miles two years old for $50k.
Saw this one…
Been looking at a lot of these. Mileage? I found a 10ft box truck in Ohio that looks promising. Was thinking about things and seems like i would probably want to purchase closer to spring so I could pick up a 275 tote of SH on the way back up and see how you guys live instead of using my 3 packs of bleach
I’m sure you’ve already considered, but where you’re in a remote area - will it be harder/take longer to get parts/repairs for something like this vs a typical pickup truck?
IDK, will Canada let you pass thru with a tote of bleach (and 275 puts you over the DOT limit of 119 for requiring hazmat/placards BTW). I’d hate for you to buy it and get it halfway back, only to be foiled and waste the money entirely due to regs…
Oh I’m sure. I still would have my current work truck and a backup PW that I can run out of the bed. I’d definitely have it gone through while down south
The good news is I work for the Alaska state ferry and should be able to get it on there. Have checked with captains regarding SH and quantity and they don’t seem to have an issue with it. We go from Bellingham, Washington to Alaska and I have a free pass for vehicles 30ft and under so the cost of truck and road tripping plus 3 days at sea and it would be in Juneau.
Just bear in mind that doesn’t save you from the DOT regs
