How do you manage and/or lower your expenses?

It’s been about a year since we’ve added residential pressure/soft washing services as add-ons to our window/gutter cleaning business. We’ve been very happy with the additional work. And, obviously, we’ve benefited from the information here!

Just been going over our P&L and looking at the expenses of PW compared to our other services. We are currently at about 50% expense. Of course, this includes some of our start up expense. (Trailer, tanks, reels, etc.)

I’m just curious what some of you guys with larger/older operations usually expect to be the percentage of expenses for your PW services. Are they higher or lower? Any advice on managing those expenses over time?

Start up costs and operating costs are two separate things.

Biggest expense I can control is time. Machines are going to break. Things wear out. Gas and Bleach are constants. BUT, half a dozen guys going in the store to get coffee and stuff when they fill up trucks in the morning adds up to a lost hour of time and revenue. Put a coffee machine in the shop. Make sure they fill up trucks on the way back to the shop everyday. They will fill up quick because they want to get back and go home. Finds ways to be efficient and make your guys do them. Buy the best of everything.
