Honest question

This’s an honest question, without my usual Buzzy sense of humour or a delayed punch line, because I don’t know the answer.

@jzbreeland you’d be the focus here so it’d be weird if I didn’t tag you. It’s a seperate thread so it doesn’t derail the good topic you’ve got going.

Isn’t it a bit sneaky to:

  • copy the idea behind proportioner
  • make it at work
  • ask people not to copy you
  • sell it direct to forum users skipping out the associated store?

Or am I just overly sensitive and remember the sim-Pole days on WCRA.

It’s an entirely neutral question because I loved the idea while it was completely a DIY collaborative community project. I’m just unsure how I feel now it’s for sale.

the disclaimer’s there, there is no avant garde trolling here

I had avoided the thread as it seemed boring to me when a $20 downstream injector can do 95% of what they are trying to accomplish. You asked 4 questions and here are my answers for what it is worth

  1. No

  2. Yes. Firing offense

  3. Yes

  4. No idea

I have determined him to be a weird duck and have just avoided anymore contact.

I have no response sorry mate.

Because I usually intentionally make it hard to tell whether I’m being serious or joking… I have to make it clear I have my sensible hat on here.

I didn’t intend it as four seperate questions. They go together a lot I think

Example. Copying a product by itself… fine
Copying, getting help from community and making diy… Probably fine
Copying, selling and asking others not to copy you… hmmm

Obviously the parts list is shown now. That may mitigate part of this

Well, in all fairness you are asking questions in my tomorrow, I’m answering them in my today and you are responding to your yesterday. Bit confusing to say the least.

No offense taken. I don’t know the answers either. I posted up all the parts with part numbers and manufacturers. It started because I wanted to add a softwash system to my future trailer build but it was too expensive for the Proportioner.

I have worked on it at work, but in my spare time. I tend to get my electrical drawings done weeks before scheduled deadlines and then I have to wait for new projects to come through. I’m the only guy at my work who isn’t behind. I’m actually ahead. Really ahead.

I only offered to sell it after several people had been messaging me interested in buying a setup. So why not?

I couldn’t copy the Proportioner because I don’t know what inside of it. I can assume, because the concept is simple. I just have access to cheap parts and bigger valves.

I only asked that no one take all of my work and turn around and sell it to someone for $25 less than me. I didn’t intend to convey anything else. And I only asked that because I was asked to share the parts list publicly, which I promptly and gladly shared with everyone.

I’m really not trying to hurt or offend anyone at all, and if I have, I apologize. If you think it’s wrong, I can rescind the offer publically. That’s no problem for me. I’m not trying to create or be drama. Whatever suggestions or advice you have, please share.

1. Nope, unless it has a patent, and then they can fight it out in court.

2. Unless he works for you it’s none of your business.

3.He can ask anything he wants - having people respect it is something else altogether. No harm, no foul.

4. Again, none of your business. If the powers at be want a cut or advertising fees that’s their business.

Pretty much spot on for me too. Only changes:

  1. If he worked for me, yes. Anyone else. Whatevs.

FOUR. (it keeps changing my number!). We’ve already been told they’re not exceptionally happy about us recommending other vendors even which is understandable. I just don’t really think a forum is a place to sell stuff. Post a link to a website or a landing page that talks about a product? I can get on board with that because the little X on that tab is an easy way out.

If I’m being totally honest, I’d probably buy one if I didn’t like tinkering so dang much.

Just to be clear for anyone that isn’t aware, early on in his thread he said that he discussed this project with his employer, and that they were ok with it.

Also, the WCRA store doesn’t sell anything like this… but i imagine if they wanted to, jzbree would entertain the possibility of pairing up with them.

It’s probably a good idea to at least discuss it with the admin, and like squid suggested, make a separate page for taking orders if they felt it was best.

I guess that’s the exact situation here, with my question and your response.

No harm, no foul.

That’s good.

I wanted to ask because I really like the idea and your process, then I started to feel a bit iffy about it. Why sit pondering uncomfortable about something when I could just ask, right?

I like your response. Thanks

By all means, ask away. And if you have suggestions, send those too. Like I said, I’m not trying to take advantage of anyone, be malicious, be deceitful, or cause drama. But if I can make a good system and sell it to you for the same price you could build it yourself, and still make some money, why not? It saves you time and labor, and helps me fund my trailer build (and the Tundra I’m planning on picking up tomorrow to satisfy all you Prius haters…JK. My wife and I legitimately need a second vehicle now, unrelated to Prius smack-talk).

Great, now you need a bigger trailer, LOL Going to piss that Tundra off pulling that little trailer around.

In all honestly, I think the trailer is going to look pretty empty. Just one small machine, 2 hose reels on the rail, surface cleaner, some SH and EBC. Not sure when a buffer tank will go on, but even then, I’ll have tons of space for a while. It just has so much room on it. I think I’ll get a few years out of it. I don’t do this full time like you guys tho, at least not yet. So it makes sense for me.

We’ll see. You’ll have that sucker packed full in no time.
