HomeAdvisor Experience

I guess I average 10 to 16 per week and some are trash, some are small, some are just price shopping, then some are great. Just part of the game.

Iā€™m about to think out loud. Feel free to reply and shut this idea right down lol.

Home Advisor in my research can be very good but also very corrosive to your own personal websites SEO. I have heard of jobs that would normally go through to your website, now will go through home advisor. And now your paying for leads you wouldnt have otherwise had to.

With that all being said. What happens if you just use a different business name for HomeAdvisor use only. Would it really be that much of a pain in the ass to do? that way they can market your company however they like. And they can never step on your ā€œMainā€ businessā€™s online presence?

Iā€™m sure iā€™m not the first one who thought of this. I was just thinking what if you started a second company and only advertised services on HomeAdvisor exclusively.

Actually not a bad idea. They want you to have a site, so you could set up just a basic one, get another business license, etc. That way youā€™re competing with yourself to some degree instead of against your site. No different than having multiple landing pages really.

I surprise myself sometimes

I have been using HA for over a year now. Here is what I have learned and experienced.
Over the last year Home advisor cost me about 10% of money made off of HA leads. Win some lose some. Turn a $20 lead into a $500 job, or on the flip side take the time and gas to travel to quote a job to get out bid by someone else. All in all at the end of the day Home advisor will cost you about 10%. Where Iā€™m located anyways.

Here are some tips that helped me:

  • Control your leads, schedule 2 weeks out. turn off your leads. Once you get through the first week turn them back on (remember they turn back on every 2 days on their own at midnight.) I have my leads set a $500 per month and I can pretty much guarantee they will hit that $500 every month if not controlled. I learned this the hard way. So after about 3 months of that lead control is at the top of my list.

  • Leads are spread among all of your competition. Say a zip code gets 30 leads. anyone who has there leads on will get this lead. With that said. Direct Select leads (people directly select you or want to book online) those are delivered in a pecking order. So your name will sometimes pop up for a customer and sometimes not. It has to do with the customers selection process when making a request.

  • Getting refunds on junk leads (and there is a lot of those) can be rough. Now a junk lead is some sort of customers information that is missing. Addressā€¦ Accurate phone etcā€¦ you peck hard enough they will refund your lead.

  • Reviews are hit and miss on how fast they post. I did a job yesterday and my review was up last night. On the other hand, i had a review post 2 days ago that I did 2 months ago.

Hope some of this helps. I am still working on first cup of coffee.
