Awesome brother! I will look you up. Do you still get some jobs in on the warm days that we get in the winter time or do you recover and wait for spring time?

I don’t know what I’d do without a yellow notebook in my truck. Not that I ever used one before I started my business but now I always find myself jotting stuff down. I just recently started putting appointments in the calendar on my phone. Never needed to before because I’d just remember the couple of appointments I had each year. Now if I don’t put them in my phone I’ll forget. According to you I’m getting old so makes sense I guess.

I used one of these until 2006.

I agree with pretty much everyone’s opinions and advice so far. You and any other guy who stumble upon this thread are definitely being pointed in the right direction.

Here is what may need to be reiterated though. This will kind of be a catchall and not necessarily for your exact situation.

You can go ahead and file for a business name and begin setting up the legal stuff. You can be legally named XYZ LLC and then LATER, once you have decided on an actual name to run your company as, file a “doing business as.” That way you get a jump on having your ducks in a row legally and dont have to spend a tremendous amount of time putting thought into a business name right this moment. I spend 6 weeks picking mine but incorporated 2 months before.

If you think you know what equipment you want/need then you are not ready to buy. You want to KNOW you know what you want/need. You can throw away a lot of that precious start up cash buying stuff you dont need or that won’t last.

Read here and watch every YouTube video that exists. Not those silly “oddly satisfying” compilations, but vids by professionals wearing pants. After about 4 hours of videos and 12 hours of reading, it kind of just clicks and you will have the confidence to know that what you are watching is legit or the “how not to do it” variety.

If you want to get a lot of business fast, you will have to master networking overnight OR pay to play by advertising. I wish i would have made my startup budget 50% advertising. There’s just no way to stress that enough. Some may disagree, it just all depends on the trajectory you want for your business.

I think everyone who knows what these are have used them. I still have mine I carried for all my flights. [quote=“marinegrunt, post:24, topic:22726”]

All of mine were lost when my trunk of goodies went missing on my move back to Kentucky. Probably had a dozen of those things filled with everything from serial numbers to particularly offensive jokes… I swear the Military would grind to a halt with out them

Solid advice. Gives me something else to take care of over the next few months. Appreciate you taking the time to write all that out.

I kept one for Iraq and one for Afghanistan. I lost both with everything thing else when my house flooded in 2016. Been a while since i though about those books.

I’m in Mississippi. A little south of you!

Ha. Just a little. You do 48/96 or Kelly schedule?

We are 24/48. Not a bad schedule for doing this as well.

That’s my thoughts. We do the 48/96 so it works out very nicely for this kind of thing.

Welcome! If you want to come to Kansas City, I’ve got another fella coming out in January for 3 days to “lease” my labor and shop to build a rig. I could talk for days about this stuff. Keep reading!

Wow man. Thanks for the generous offer. I actually might be out that way in January/February time to do some duck hunting. Even if I don’t make that trip I still may have to come out and learn from you.

I thought I had it all figured out in my head and then thankfully I stumbled across this forum about a month and a half ago. Thanks to these posts I didn’t drop a bunch of money on the wrong stuff like I was about to do. Instead I’ve tapped the breaks a bit and I read a lot of stuff on here almost daily. Because of several of these guys I feel like I’m just about ready to start purchasing everything, and I feel like everything I buy will be a solid purchase. As for the sarcasm someone mentioned, that’s my second language (22 year Deputy Sheriff), so I welcome it! Good luck!

Whoever mentioned the sarcasm might be a kindler, gentler soul than most of the roughnecks here. Keeps things interesting.

You’d be doing yourself a HUGE favor by attending that, @2BlackLabs.
