Engine HP Question

Hey guys,

I’m currently looking at a machine, and the sales guy is telling me a 3500 @ 5.5 and 115 Generator requires a 23HP Engine…

Now, In the past I owned a

3500 @ 4.9 (in all reality it was putting out 5.0) with also a 115 volt generator. It was powered by. 18hp Vanguard no issues! From Hydro Tek

I just think 23hp is over kill, and Since fuel is my biggest expense I’d hate for higher fuel bills. Does half a gallon of gpm really need all those extra horses?

GPM*PSI/1100=HP is the most popular formula. That comes out to 17.5 hp to drive just the pump.

What size generator do you need?

With 5.5 hp to spare, you could put out over 2,000 watts.

I think you could get by with a GX630 because you should need right around 20 hp. From what I’ve read a generator robs about 2-3 hp from the engine.

Thats the unit, I just can’t wrap my head around 23hp, I don’t need a gas guzzling monster just because thats the engine they have on shelf

Have you looked into Hydromax yet? They have quite a few stock options as far as engines go. A least they do for the 8 gpm. I haven’t really looked at the 5.5 but would think they’d have options there too. I think I’m getting ready to pull the trigger on one and going with a Kohler. @florida_condo_cleani talked me into it.

I hear you on the diesel. Hard to spend an extra $4k more but, in the long run, it would be worth it. I think if I had multiple crews and did a lot of flat work like gas stations I would. Would also be nice only having to fill up with one kind of fuel too. Maybe one day…lol

I could only find a couple prices on the Hydrotek but is quite a bit more than Hydromax. They started making Hydromax for the oil fields so suppose to be pretty tough. I know Rick is really happy with his. He’s owned a few others and ranks the Hydromax #1.

Thats a nice unit, I wonder if a Hydro Tek dealer can get a hold of these here in Cali?

The price includes free shipping if shipped to a commercial location or else it’s only like $100 shipped to a resident due to needing a lift gate.

Actually, I think it’s like $175 shipping to residential if you need a lift gate. Still not a bad price. I don’t think Hydromax sells there units anywhere but through their own shop so I doubt Hydro Tek would be able to get one. I’ve seen some Hydromax listed on eBay but Hydromax listed them on their own.

I’ll be grabbing a hydro max. Just seems like the most well built machine out there

What sucks is the prices just increased. I was going back and forth with some emails to get some questions answered and the machine I plan on getting went up $400 over the weekend. Since I had been in communication with them I wish they would’ve told me they were going to increase prices.

They drop again in Winter

They haven’t raised their prices in a few years. They don’t do the temporary pricing game. Unfortunately, prices were raised to stay. I think they’re going to hook me up since I was in the process of getting some questions answered. Even still they’re priced pretty good and especially with the cheap or free shipping.

I have a hot water hydro max I bought new two years ago, love it.

A GX630 is in order for this machine… Can’t wait!

Hydromax? Did you go with the 120v or 12v? What about you @Kentucky1234?

I have a Hydromax 8/3600 with 12v system and Beckett burner…I love it! Not saying it is better than anything else, but next month will be 3yrs I have used it and never had a single issue with anything on the machine.
