Burner Issue (Tricky One)

Great talking to you @Firefighter4hire I greatly appreciate your suggestions and advice, I have a new flow switch on the way, once it arrives I will trow it on and see how she does but first I’ll try another battery!

That old flow switch could definitely be the culprit. those things are fussy at times and that micro switch gets stuck or the pressure pin gets clogged up with debris. We go through around 2 or 3 a year. Hard water is usually our problem.

Flow Switch Arrived Today! Hopefully I have enough time tomorrow to trow it on and report back

Update

Got the new flow switch installed, Unfortunately I ran out of time and was un able to do a test run.

I noticed a + & - sign on this screw and was just wondering what that is. I’m reusing the lead coming from the machines wiring as it looks like a PITA to remove all the looms and replace it as well.

Does this type of FS need adjusting??

That ST-5 needs to be vertical. The ST-5 uses gravity to lower the magnet, the ST-6 uses a light gauge spring so it’s more flexible in mounting positions other than vertical. Make a habit to not use thread tape on them, only use liquid thread sealant. If you have a low flow machine that’s not moving the magnet enough to reach the reeds you’ll loosen the screw and adjust it until the switch closes

Got it!

Looks like the drip worsened…

The ST 5 is mounted as it was on the manual, like factory. I will try to mount it completely vertical, but if it rolled out of the factory this way it should work!

I replaced the fuel valve solenoid just now for testing purposes and the problem remains.

It almost seems like too much fuel is getting dumped in to the burner, tons of un burned fuel not combusting

Things left to try.

Re adjust the gun.

Try yet another battery.

Lastly replace the fuel pump.

My theory: Not enough fuel returning back the to fuel tank when off the trigger and forcing more fuel into the burner…

Before the new pump, I may try to dial back the psi on the Beckett pump… its set at 140 I may push it back a pit… Obviously too much fuel

What size fuel nozzle is in it? How many gpm is your machine?

Replace it with a 80B then get a guage to set the depth on the gun assembly in the burner tube you can’t get the nozzle that close to the air cone as it won’t combust correctly.

It’s a 3500 @ 4gpm Skid running off the spigot.

Fuel Nozzle is a 1.75gph 90*B

UPDATE

Installed the flow switch vertically. No change

Installed a bigger newer battery. No change

Dropped the oil pump PSI from 140 down to 120,100,90,80. No change

Re Checked the gun assy to cone gap, using a handy dandy 650 gauge. No Change

Checked for oil leaks, at the burner head ect. No Visible Leaks

Re Checked Transformer Ignitor spark, Looks good!

Fan is working, Blows about right for a 12volt fan.

The only thing that has me a bit confused now, is that it the burner head has no CAD Eye and per hydro teks manual is should have one. If someone deleted the CAD eye could this be the culprit of possibly over fueling? That’s really all I can think of now

Dang I was hoping it was the fuel nozzle. My hydrotek burned extremely rich. Turned out the factory put a 3.5 fuel nozzle in a 5.5gpm machine.

I may go try a 80B nozzle.

Dats alot a nozzle

Yep looked like a freight train when firing up, especially after sitting awhile

Any thoughts on the system not having a CAD eye?

If you don’t have a Cad cell well it’s just that you don’t have one. They’re installed sometimes to confirm you have flame so the fuel solenoid does not continue to provide fuel.

Got it!

@dperez

Can the ST 5 Switch cause problems if the machine is working off the spigot and not bypassing to a buffer tank? It’s got that circulating system… as it was sold as a skid, not set up for tank use.

My buddy was persistent on keeping the skid as original as possible, I suggest using the other style FS

Damn, This one keep messing with me

@Chesebro did we already talk about the eye?

@Firefighter4hire

We did, You asked me about it and I said it was missing. That it had looked like it was deleted. But this morning looking at the hydro tek manual it shows model number ss35004vg had one when it was made.

All I know is previous owner ran this machine with no service maintenance to it til it stopped! Then banged on it with a screwdriver trying to make it work and fiddled with the settings, gave up and post it for sale. I would not be surprised if he yanked it off…

Ill post a picture of the electric box
