Be wary of "great deals"!

So about 4 months ago, a local guy we buy hoses from, says he’s got a great deal on 1 wire hose. I say great let me get a few hundred and try it out.

Second burst since I bought them.

I just dreamt of bursting hose but I’ve never seen it levate. When was the hose manufactured? It should say 3Q2017 or something on the cover. Hose doesn’t stay “new” forever and you’ll see the cheap hose is the older hose. Can you upload a picture of the damage? It looks like you kinked it there as that’s a pretty tight bend radius I see.

That’s wild I have never seen one not just whip around.

3Q18, it’s only been used 5-6 days a week for 5-10 hours a day. I’m not complaining, just saying.

What type of unloader do you have?

ikr…craziest hose thing I’ve seen.

K7.

I was cleaning a long stretch of sidewalk and felt pressure change, thought I ran outta water, turned around and saw that

That was pretty cool. I bet I couldn’t recreate that if I tried.

Appears maybe its been rusting from inside. Edit: i see 4mnths, plenty of time I guess.

@garry.cooper Hate to be the bearer of bad news but that was all you. When you nick a hose down to the wire braid water will collect in it and just chew on three little strands then pop. If you wear down a cover it’s no big deal as the wire will self clean and keep the rust at bay but you can’t have a gouge collecting and holding on to water or the hose is going to go quick.

Here’s my question…

My grey hose bought this spring has some dents in the last 20’ or so. If it blows, do they make a DIY field repair kit, or do I just fall back to my spares and take it in?

They make field repair kits, but I don’t trust it use them

I think I trust the field repair fittings (installed correctly) more than having a hydraulic shop crimp new fittings onto a used hose. I have read a lot of people say their crimped fittings have failed when put on worn hose.

If you are nervous about having a field repair fitting right next to your gun, you could always flip the hose so the repaired end is at the reel and the factory crimped fitting is by the gun.

Another option to consider is having a 10’ sacrificial whip right before your gun, as that’s where the majority of failures happen.

@garry.cooper very important that you check your hoses for any defects on a regular basis. I do mine weekly every Friday afternoon as I’m rolling up 1 last time for the week and get very grumpy if I see my guys just rolling up quickly because it’s Friday and beer time at the shop. In the video posted it might look harmless but what people need to realise is that it can happen anywhere along the length of hose. If you want to know what a few thousand psi to the face feels like I’m your man. As @Innocentbystander said you can get field repair kits but I wouldn’t trust them either. They are to a pressure hose what a spare wheel is to a car- temporary.

@MuscleMyHustle No, this is simply not true. I’ve lost plenty of swage fittings that were not bite to wire and zero field fittings that were installed on the proper hose. Suttner hose lacks a little on the o.d. when you put a caliper on it and the tube is not quite in spec so no they will not make a good fit for a field repair. If you have not worn the o.d. down and you’re using the proper field fitting for R1 R2 hose you won’t have a problem. I currently have 64 hose assemblies with 128 field fittings and non of them are coming off before I take them off to use on new hose.

@dperez you can’t assume everyone has there brain cells intact when there making a repair, ive had some funny characters work for me. me personally I either shorten hose and get it crimped or use as low pressure water supply back up hoses. Hoses and ladders should be given a bit more thought if they aren’t in 100% working order.
