A Toast to the inventor of these Gutter Guards

How are you cleaning them?

I’ve switched at the beginning of this season to not disassemble guards to do clean outs. Let the customer know that because of the guards we can’t clean out the inside but we can blow off the tops for them.

Customer is understanding as I spoke with him about possibly just trashing them cause they aren’t doing any good. Half of them are banged up so I started there. Remove a corner and clean as far as I can reach and then run the blower. They aren’t turning out excellent but passable.

yeah, those are fun.

Do you think gutter guards force more stuff to go down the front of the gutter and contribute to tiger stripes?

It enables rust to run down that’s for sure. These were probably the worst I’ve seen.

2 screws?

If a customer wants me to clean out the gutters and they have gutter guards, I only do it with the understanding that I am not putting them back in, and that they are possibly going in the garbage.

Gutter guards are great for rotting out face boards and rafter tails.

These clipped in

I tried to choose my words wisely and explain to the customer that these particular guards aren’t doing what they were intendeda d they should throw them away. Still had caked up leaves, catkins and twigs. This job would have been a breeze if I simply removed them and trashed them and used my scraper tool

They look like the ones on our old house. They had a screw on both sides of the 2 ft section. Nightmare

Haha have done alot of those. Makes for a good upsell tho. Cust. Either pays the time to do it right or remove, clean, and install mine. Sell it as a savings.

I stopped doing all gutters with gutter guards…even though you can charge more taking them off …it’s too much work.

Agree…especially when you usually use a blower

I’m not trying to sidetrack the post but I’m curious to know how well gutter vacuums work. Obviously they can’t be used with guards but if they work as advertised it might be something to think about

A $200 shop vac with the gutter cleaning kit works great on story and a half/2 stories. Or you can buy a $5k sky vac.

I don’t think so. My dog eats to much for me to afford that not to mention two teenagers. I was thinking about the RHG gutter pro vacuum though. I’m almost 54 and my knees have gotten to where they hate ladders

I met a guy that made one out of an old Billy goat lawn vac with some vacuum hose and pvc . I didn’t see him use it but he said it works great . Thing had a 5hp gas engine that would shred up the leaves and discharge in the the bag. I wanted to make one but apparently billygoat vacs are not very popular around here I can’t find one used

We have an old chimney sweeping vacuum. It sits on a 55 gallon barrel. I wonder if that could be turned into something. I’ll go out to the barn tomorrow and take a closer look at it. I’ve never paid it much attention really.

We clean inaccessible courtyard gutters with a sirocco VAC, twigs, sticks & pine needles will clog elbow sweeps 5 times out of ten, it works & for certain applications is a money maker but I wouldn’t want to use it exclusively, blowing from roof is 100 times faster
